Raúl Martínez: El Desafío de los Sesenta (The Challenge of the 1960s) This very scarce vintage exhibition poster promotes the retrospective show "Raúl Martínez: El desafío de los sesenta" held at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba, from December 1995 to January 1996. This was an important museum exhibition focusing on Martinez's crucial works from the 1960s, commencing in what turned out to be the last year of his life . The exhibition was held at the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Trocadero entre Zulueta y Monserrate, Habana Vieja). The artwork depicted is Salomón (1964), an oil and collage piece from his Homenajes series, owned by the Colección Dalia García Barbán. This poster is extremely scarce. Because it was printed locally in Cuba during the mid-1990s (the "Special Period" economic crisis), paper stocks were limited and print runs were highly localized. Furthermore, original paper ephemera printed in Cuba during this period has a notoriously low survival rate. Cuba's intense, humid tropical climate, poor residential storage facilities, and insect damage mean very few copies survived intact outside of formal archives. More about. He is best known for vibrant, colorful Pop Art portraits of revolutionary figures like José Martí and Camilo Cienfuegos. His work defined the visual culture of post-1959 Cuba. Raúl Martínez was the leading Cuban artist after the revolution of 1959. The son of a sugar mill worker and a teacher, Martínez moved to Havana in 1940 where he began his fine art training at the San Alejandro Academy. Encouraged by abstract artist Sandu Darie, and after reading Vision in Motion by Bauhaus professor László Moholy-Nagy, Martínez enrolled in the Chicago Design Institute where his canvases took an abstract expressionist turn. In 1953, back in Cuba, he joined the group Los Once with whom he exhibited until 1956. Establishing his presence within the Havana avant-garde, Martínez also worked as a freelance graphic artist for magazines and publishing houses. Between 1960 and 1961 he was appointed artistic director of the cultural magazine Lunes de Revolución, and in the following years he also participated in the foundation of the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC) and the Cuban Book Institute. The large-scale painting Listen America c. 1967 is emblematic of an abrupt stylistic shift in Raúl Martínez’s oeuvre. After deciding to take a break from painting in 1966, he focused on his work in graphic design, a medium he considered more socially relevant. Having observed the visual impact of the murals and graffiti that appeared across the island to celebrate the revolution, he returned to painting in 1967, renouncing abstraction in favour of a more direct aesthetic language. Together with paintings of revolutionary heroes Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos, Listen America was one of Martínez’s first figurative artworks to seek to capture the popular revolutionary fervour. While maintaining a connection with modernist abstraction, evident in the use of repetition within a grid-like structure, his depiction of Cuba’s leader Fidel Castro in a naïve painterly style rendered the work intelligible and connected it to local folk tradition. Immortalised during one of his memorable speeches, Martínez’s Fidel salutes America, transmitting Cuba’s revolutionary message.

This powerful limited edition lithograph by William Steen was published in 1988 as part of the Art Against Aids portfolio, numbered 38/50. Superb provenance as it is was acquired from the original Art Against AIDS Portfolio published in Houston, Texas. This will be the first time the work will be removed from the portfolio. The late 1980s was the height of the AIDS epidemic, and this was one of many efforts by the creative community to raise funds to assist in fighting this deadly scourge that disproportionately affected the artistic community. William Steen 1949-2008 William Steen, artist, collector, curator, and mystic, died of pancreatic cancer on December 20 in New York, where he has lived since 2001. Long time framer at the Menil Collection, the soft-spoken Steen is remembered in Houston where he had his first exhibition of paintings in 1978 at the Roberto Molina Gallery. In 1984 Steen made his first of several trips to India, photographing thousands of Tibetan Buddhist ritual paintings. A champion of outsider art, in 2000 he tangled with the Houston Police over the grafitti mural he comissioned for the walls of the reclaimed Sterling Cleaners...
