'Lesser Moddy and Moddy Tern' Chromolithograph from Gracius Broinowski's 'The Birds of Australia' , 1887-1891. Gracius Joseph Broinowski (1837-1913) was an artist and ornithologist. Born in Poland, he arrived in Australia in 1857. After teaching art for many years, he was employed by the government to illustrate Australian animals and birds for display in classrooms. Afterwards he prepared his own 'The Birds of Australia' from which this chromolithograph comes. TECHNIQUE : A chromolithograph is a lithograph printed with several tints from anywhere from eight to forty stones, one for each color. It was a process invented towards the mid 19th century and became very popular in the late 19th century for printing art in colour. SIZE : 255mm by 355mm / 10" by 14" (sheet)
