ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Tammy Mackay comments "I have always had a passion for printmaking, which has always been my main form of expression. Although I have used etching and monoprint as my primary mediums, I have always experimented with new techniques. More recently I have used photopolymer plates and drypoint. These techniques are often combined with hand drawn or hand coloured chine collé. Exploring and developing new techniques opens up new possibilities which I feel is essential to my development as an artist and printmaker. Tammy Mackay's most recent body of work is entitled Love [loss] and Identity. This series has been a personal exploration of these themes. A journey of feelings often linked to an object, moment or past memory. Images have become both layered in process and layered in meaning. Animals and birds have become central to the theme and convey a subtle symbolism within their depiction. “Those Lost Forever” exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2013 and “Gone but not Forgotten” exhibited in this year’s show are both from this series. I grew up on a farm in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. I studied at Rhodes University in South Africa and graduated with an Honours Degree in Fine Arts, majoring in Printmaking. Although I now live in the UK, my work still reflects the imagery of where I grew up. I show my work in the UK and abroad, and have had work included in corporate collections in South Africa.

What’s That? by Helen Fay [2012] Limited Edition Etching , hand printed on Hanemulle etching paper Edition number edition size 75 Image size: H:21 cm x W:18 cm Complete Size of Unframed Work: H:45 cm x W:30 cm x D:.15cm Sold Unframed Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look Original Print, hand made and hand printed by the artist. A gentoo penguin, standing wings out, her attention just grabbed by something. The light is just catching her soft chest feathers. The etching captures the tactile softness of the feathers. Animals have always been at the heart of my work. I find the form, movement and behaviour of the creatures I draw a source of limitless fascination. I love the idea of them watching me, watching them as I draw. I hope my appreciation of the sentience and character of the animals I draw comes across in my work. Over my career I have drawn everything from primates to penguins, dogs, ostriches and even an echidna. These days dogs are my main focus, mostly because I adore dogs but also because they are such an integral part of life. I am delighted by the theory that humans and dogs co evolved, we wouldn’t be what we are without them and vice versa. I try to pare my images down to a balanced simplicity that directs attention to the subject of the picture. I try to balance the subject and the space it occupies, giving each equal importance. Light is hugely important to my work, I imagine my subject in three dimensions as I draw and the light describes the musculature and texture that gives the drawing it’s presence and grounds it in the picture. I aim to capture a pause, a moment where whatever I draw looks like it could wander off or leap up any minute. My influences include Japanese prints, Chinese and Japanese brush drawing and the European artists who were influenced by Japan. I am really excited by composition, by artists like Bonnard and Leon Spilliaert...

Newsome says about her work: “Painting is my passion; I enjoy the process of capturing something beautiful and organic while creating contrast with vibrant and pastel colors combined with quiet spaces and bold mark-making. My subject matter is often plants or animals that make me feel empowered or inspired as metaphors for my own life experiences.” Born in Columbus, Georgia, and raised on a small farm in Alabama, Newsome's love for flora and fauna shines through in her work. Her art practice received sponsorship from Chroma's Atelier Interactive brand of paint while she attended Troy University. Today, her artworks are collected across the United States, and she continues to create from her studio in Columbus, Georgia.
