About the Item

Vivian Stanshall (1943–1995) Lion Woodcut Signed ‘Vivian’ on the reverse Lion is a rare woodcut by Vivian Stanshall, demonstrating his bold and expressive approach to printmaking. The composition presents a powerful animal subject rendered with characteristic energy and immediacy, the carved linework lending the image a raw, almost primitive vitality. As with much of Stanshall’s visual output, the work sits between image-making and narrative invention, suggesting symbolic or theatrical undertones rather than straightforward naturalism. Stanshall is best known as the creative force behind the influential British cult ensemble Vivian Stanshall, originally formed as the Bonzo Dog Dada Band (later the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band). Emerging from the 1960s London art-school and countercultural scene, the group became synonymous with surreal humour, performance art, and Dada-influenced musical pastiche. These qualities extend throughout Stanshall’s wider artistic practice, including his writing and visual work. In his prints, Stanshall often combined strong figurative motifs with an underlying sense of humour and invention, treating traditional subjects through a distinctly personal and unconventional lens. Lion reflects this approach, distilling a familiar icon into a striking, almost emblematic form. The work is further enhanced by its rarity, with only a small number of impressions believed to exist—thought to be approximately four or five in total. It is signed ‘Vivian’ on the reverse and comes directly from the artist’s estate. Provenance: From the artist’s estate and thence by descent to his son.
