About the Item

Alex Colville (1920-2013) is one of the titans of Canadian art. Working across mediums, Colville is a revered painter, draughtsman, engraver, and muralist. He is one of the few Canadian artists whose auction record is above $2 million. Spending his life and career in Nova Scotia, Colville is renowned for his atmospheric depictions, frequently portraying his family, domestic animals, and scenes of Atlantic Canada. Despite the degree of familiarity throughout his oeuvre, his work is often characterized by a visceral sense of uneasiness and mystery. Rendered in Colville's signature style, this image shows two men at a gun range. One man stands confidently, with one hand in his pocket and the other on a pistol as he takes aim. The other man stands slightly behind the first, looking at the target through binoculars. As in much of Colville’s work, the apparent calm of the scene belies a latent psychological charge. The act of aiming—of fixing one’s vision and intent on a distant mark—becomes emblematic of control, vigilance, and the fragile boundary between order and threat. The image's cool light and measured spacing heighten this sense of suspended action, inviting the viewer into a moment that feels both ordinary and faintly foreboding. Today, Colville's work is enjoyed internationally in collections of major institutions and galleries around the world including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Museum Boymans-van Beuningen (Rotterdam), and the Museum Ludwig (Cologne).
