About the Item

El caballo raptor - from Los Proverbios is an original black and white etching realized by Francisco Goya (1746-1828). The artwork is the plate n. 10 from of the second edition of the famous series Los Proverbios edited in 1875 by the Real Academia of Fine Arts in San Fernando, Madrid. Good conditions except for very ligh foxings. Rare edition printed in a very few copies, many of which without frontispiece like this one. Beautiful impressions with very fresh and bright ink and wide margins. Very small traces of foxing on the margins, with holes of biding sealed. All the different editions of “Proverbios” were posthumous, having been printed since 1864. Los Proverbios (The Proverbs), also known as Los Disparates (The Follies), is a very enigmatic portfolio of eighteen prints (aquatint and etching, with retouching in drypoint and burin), still studied even today: the last major series etched by Goya and very difficult to explain. The dark and complex compositions have charmed many interpreters and inspired many political commentaries and satires, traditional proverbs and the Spanish carnival. Four works were added later in the last years of the artist’s life. Reference: Harris, 248/265.
