The Hexham Abbey Bible. This is a unique 1629 King James "Authorized Bible", Cambridge University Press, FIRST EDITION, published by Tho [mas] and John Buck, Cambridge, 1629. Medium folio. Reference: Herbert 424. This unique and historically significant Bible contains the Book of Common Prayer, New Testament (with 100+ 16th-century engravings), and Whole Book of Psalms in English Meter (all titles d. 1629; all parts within complete); excludes OT to make this a special Prayer Book designed for public worship, created as such in c.1661. Interleaved within the NT are 115 interleaved full-page engravings (106 full-sized, 18 half-sized), most dated 1565-1585 but a few dated 1639-1643. Established provenance through scholarly research: compiled and interleaved by Dr. George Ritschel, Sr. in 1661 at Hexham Abbey, Northumberland, U.K., ownership was passed down through a series of Rectors and Lecturers at Hexham Abbey, the last known being Rev. Robert Clarke c.1840 (bookplate). The Bible was likely "shelved" in early 1662, unused until (re-)discovered in 2012. Pages are in pristine condition (no marks of any kind), though the very thin, fine, linen-rag paper throughout is ageing. Edges gilted and gauffered with diamond and symbol patterns, this done after the binding with engravings. Bound tightly in plain brown leather covered boards c.1790-c.1800 (per museum conservator who reattached the boards), with five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. All engravings are Old Masters in the Northern Renaissance or Netherlandish style (artists include: G. Groenning, J. Sadeler, Harmen Muller, H. Goltzius, J. Wierix, M. de Vos, G. de Jode, Maerten van Heemskerck, Jan Stradanus, P. Galle, P. Furnius, H. Collaert). After six years of research, The Hexham Abbey Bible was first exhibited to the public in early 2018 at the Hallie Ford Museum in Salem, OR, under the curatorship of art historian Dr. Ricardo De Mambro Santos (Willamette University); Exhibit title "Holy Beauty: Northern Renaissance Engravings Discovered in an Early English Bible." To our knowledge, The Hexham Abbey Bible is the EARLIEST known English Bible (by date) to contain full-page picture-engravings (rather than portraits), and the ONLY known English Bible to contain 16th century engravings of any kind. [A handful of c.1660 Bibles exist with 17th century engravings.] The 1629 Cambridge edition is said by many to be the most beautiful English Bible printed up to that date. On the cusp of the Enlightenment, The Hexham Abbey Bible represents the best of Western Civilization in its single-volume combination of Art and History that has shaped the modern world. There is simply no equal among early English Bibles! Possible hand-delivery to most locations within the continental USA, Canada, UK, and Europe. Special consideration will be given to institutions that can and will display this Bible to the public, and open it to scholarly research.
