About the Item

Plate from Buffon's Histoire Naturelle, Tome III – Pl. 10, p. 234 This copperplate engraving presents a systematic anatomical study of the human brain through multiple cranial sections. The plate comprises five figures, each illustrating a different stage of dissection intended to clarify the arrangement of the cerebral hemispheres, ventricular cavities, and deeper midline structures. Figure 1 shows a superior view of the brain within the opened cranial vault. The cerebral hemispheres are separated by the longitudinal fissure, with the cortical convolutions rendered in dense, intricate line work. The calvarial margins frame the specimen, emphasizing the spatial relationship between brain and skull. Figure 2 presents a superior view after partial removal of the cerebral substance, exposing the lateral ventricles and midline structures. The corpus callosum and adjoining internal formations are indicated, with numerical annotations corresponding to explanatory text. The contrast between the smoother internal surfaces and the textured cortical exterior is achieved through varied cross-hatching. Figure 3 reveals a deeper stage of dissection, displaying the ventricular system and basal regions more prominently. The cerebellum is visible posteriorly, while the central structures of the diencephalon and brainstem emerge clearly within the cranial cavity. Figure 4 isolates a small osseous element—likely a cranial or sphenoidal component—rendered independently to clarify its morphology. Figure 5 depicts another isolated bony structure associated with the cranial base, carefully modeled to show its contours and articular surfaces. The engraving demonstrates refined linear precision and controlled shading, characteristic of eighteenth-century anatomical illustration. The balanced arrangement of figures within the ruled border underscores the plate’s pedagogical purpose, combining scientific exactitude with compositional clarity.
