About the Item

Plate from Buffon's Histoire Naturelle, 1771 Edition, Tom. III – Pl. 16, p. 266 This finely executed copperplate engraving presents a detailed anatomical study of the posterior abdominal cavity and pelvic region, viewed from the front with the anterior wall removed. The illustration reveals the principal visceral, vascular, and nervous structures in situ, carefully dissected to demonstrate their spatial relationships. At the upper portion, the kidneys are prominently displayed beneath the diaphragm, each surmounted by the suprarenal (adrenal) glands. From the medial concavity of each kidney descend the ureters, shown coursing inferiorly toward the pelvic cavity. The central axis of the composition is occupied by the great abdominal vessels: the abdominal aorta and the inferior vena cava, from which numerous branches emerge. These include the renal vessels, mesenteric arteries, and iliac bifurcations, all meticulously traced and numbered for reference. Inferiorly, within the pelvic basin, the urinary bladder is depicted centrally, with adjacent reproductive structures partially exposed. The iliac arteries and veins are shown dividing and descending toward the lower limbs, their branching patterns rendered with particular clarity. The surrounding musculature of the pelvis and proximal thighs is partially sectioned, revealing the passage of major neurovascular bundles into the lower extremities. The engraving is characterized by precise line work and subtle cross-hatching, which model volume and differentiate tissues—vascular structures appearing smooth and tubular, while muscular and connective tissues are rendered with denser shading. The numerical annotations correspond to explanatory text in the accompanying volume, indicating the plate’s didactic purpose within a larger anatomical treatise. Overall, the composition exemplifies eighteenth-century scientific illustration, combining technical accuracy with balanced arrangement, and serving both as a teaching aid and as a document of anatomical inquiry.
