About the Item

Tom. X, Pl. XXXVIII, p. 250. From Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière. Paris, 1771. Etching and engraving on laid paper. Sheet size: 24.5 × 19.5 cm. A refined scientific plate composed of six numbered figures illustrating magnified anatomical and structural details—likely integumentary or epidermal textures—rendered in sectional and surface views. The upper register (Figs. 1–2) presents cellular or tessellated formations in hexagonal patterning; the central register (Figs. 3–4) depicts longitudinal sectional views with rhythmic, linear striations; and the lower register (Figs. 5–6) illustrates cylindrical and stratified cross-sections with honeycomb and arched cellular arrangements. Lettered annotations correspond to Buffon’s descriptive text. Executed with exceptional clarity and discipline, the engraving demonstrates the Enlightenment fascination with microscopic observation and structural order in nature. The fine, repetitive hatching and geometrical precision emphasize both scientific rigor and aesthetic restraint. The arrangement of figures within a balanced rectangular framework reflects the didactic purpose of the plate, presenting comparative structures systematically. Upper margin inscribed “Tom. X.” and “Pl. XXXVIII. Pag. 250.” Lower margin signed in the plate “De Seve del.” and “Baron sculp.” A clear plate mark visible. Printed on period laid paper. Condition: Very good, with light age toning and a faint vertical center fold from original binding. Minor scattered foxing, not affecting legibility. Impression sharp and well-inked, preserving delicate linear detail.
