About the Item

"Artiesten Winterfest" is an original color lithograph poster designed by Jan Sluijters. It depicts a brightly colored woman with long orange hair and sunglasses and the words "Artist Winterfest" above in German. Signed in plate 31" x 20 3/4" art 41 1/4" x 31" frame Jan Sluijters (also Sluyters). Born Dec. 17, 1881; died May 8, 1957. Dutch painter, Sluijters began his studies at the Amsterdam Academy of Fine Arts in 1896. In 1904-05 he visited Paris. He was influenced by neo-impressionist painters and van Gogh and later by Gauguin and Matisse. His works, which include portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and nudes, are distinguished by bright color, dynamic forms, and broad energetic brushstrokes. All of these qualities can be seen in this poster lithograph. Sluijters revealed his humanistic views and sensitivity to the contradictions of life with particular force in his portraits and in the picture Peasants of Staphorst (1917, Municipal Museum, Amsterdam).
