Explore Picasso's artistic journey through watercolored lithographs featuring sketches numbered #3 and #7 from his iconic "Ballet Three Cornered Hat" series. Created during his collaboration with the Ballets Russes in 1919, these gouache studies signify Picasso's pictorial distance from cubism, marking a return to figurative art before entering his surrealist period in 1924. In May 1919, Picasso relocated to London for a theatrical project, producing around twenty distinct studies for stage sets, including at least four for the curtain and approximately thirty for costumes and scenery. Commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev after a trip to Spain with his dance company in 1916, it inspired him to create a new work incorporating traditional Spanish folk dances; he asked Pablo Picasso, whom he mythologized, to design the sets and costumes. Sergei Diaghilev was a brilliant impresario and founder of the famous Ballets Russes, one of the most influential dance companies of the early 20th century. Picasso welcomes the opportunity to combine the visual arts with performance, energy, and movement, a tribute to his Spanish culture, and what began as a series of brief sketches became a celebrated part of his oeuvre. The final selected drawings were compiled in a deluxe portfolio and later reproduced in numerous editions during the last century. The original sketches are to be found in the Picasso Museum in Paris. His numerous sketches for the Ballet-Three Cornered Hat suggest that he worked hard, researched, and experimented before arriving at the final result. Picasso's final costumes reflect all the Andalusian vitality he cherished, overloading them with colors. The final set for the ballet had a dark, sun-washed ambiance reminiscent of timeworn Spanish buildings. These characteristics are reflected in the subtle gouache studies used to set the mood and signature of the ballet; the simplified drawings highlight, above all, the liveliness and explosion of colors of the Spanish outfits worn by the dancers, with the dancers' bodies lightly sketched to avoid interfering with the colors, against a neutral background. Both studies bear Picasso's signature on the front of the reproductions. They are presented in their original vintage frame. On the back was a label with Picasso's name printed in capital letters, the name of the ballet, and the study number (#3 and #7). From rupture to rupture, the artist has continued to renew the relationship of art to reality and history. Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) and Guernica (1937) are among the century's most important works. Picasso also embodies a myth: the bohemian artist, the minotaur, the demiurge. Having become a star during his lifetime, Picasso died at the age of 91, and he was crowned with international glory. For all these reasons, he is commonly described as a genius.
