About the Item

Pablo Picasso's ‘Groupe de Trois Femmes’ (1922–1923) emerges from his Neoclassical period, a watershed moment in his career when he pivoted from Cubism toward classical forms and mythological subjects. Following his transformative journey to Italy in February 1917, where he encountered the immense diversity of antique sculptures in the Vatican, Renaissance masterworks in Florence and Rome, and the archaeological treasures of Pompeii, Picasso's artistic vision fundamentally shifted. In the early 1920s, he devised a unique variant of classicism using mythological images such as centaurs, minotaurs, nymphs, and fauns inspired by the classical world of Italy. This period, spanning the early 1920s, saw him draw inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman art, characterized by harmonious compositions, clear lines, and a serene, monumental quality. The three standing women in this etching and drypoint work exemplify Picasso's fascination with classical figuration. Picasso made many etchings of figures defined through outline only, with no shading or modelling, echoing motifs from ancient art such as the Three Graces. The original edition of 100 impressions places this work among Picasso's scarcest early prints—another impression is in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum. Our impression, richly and deeply inked on cream laid paper, retains the tonal sophistication that distinguishes Picasso's classical etching technique: a balance between the linear purity of his neoclassical vision and the velvety darkness of the drypoint burr. This impression exemplifies the craftsmanship and intention that Picasso brought to printmaking during one of the most generative periods of twentieth-century art. The artwork is signed and editioned in pencil, lower right, "Picasso 64/100” and has framed dimensions of 22 1/4 x 20 1/8 x 5/8 inches.
