About the Item

Pablo Picasso Saltimbanque au Repos Etching on wove paper 4 3/4 x 3 3/8 inches 10 3/4 x 10 inches sheet Pablo Picasso was one of the most influential and celebrated artists of the twentieth century. Born on October 25, 1881, in Málaga, Spain, he demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent from an early age and received formal training from his father, an art teacher. After studying in Spain, Picasso settled in Paris, where he became a central figure in the modern art movement. His career evolved through several distinct phases, including the Blue Period (1901–1904), characterized by somber, monochromatic paintings, and the Rose Period (1904–1906), known for its warmer palette and circus-themed subjects. In 1907, Picasso helped revolutionize modern art with Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, a groundbreaking work that laid the foundation for Cubism. Together with Georges Braque, he developed Cubism, one of the most important artistic innovations of the twentieth century. Picasso worked across painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, and drawing, producing an estimated 50,000 artworks during his lifetime. Among his most famous works is Guernica, a monumental anti-war painting created in response to the bombing of the Spanish town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso remained active as an artist until his death on April 8, 1973, in Mougins. Today, he is widely regarded as one of the defining figures of modern art, whose innovations transformed the course of twentieth-century painting and sculpture.
