About the Item

Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) Liberation: the prisoners are free!, from Peace in Vietnam (Field 73-1D; M&L 1387a) Lithograph printed in colours, 1973, signed and titled in pencil, numbered from the edition of 300, printed by Torrents, published by Fidelity World Arts, Illinois, on v. Piera wove paper, with margins, sheet 733 x 562mm (28 7/8 x 22 1/8in) (unframed) With the Dalí Trade authentication inscription and signature in pencil verso (dated 11/23/23) Salvador Dalí (1904 - 1989) was one of the most influential figures of Surrealism, known for his dreamlike imagery, precise draftsmanship, and ability to merge classical technique with provocative, symbolic subject matter. Born in Figueres, Spain, Dalí rose to international prominence in the early 20th century, becoming a central voice in the Surrealist movement before later developing a highly individual style that spanned painting, printmaking, film, and sculpture. His works often explore themes of time, liberation, psychology, and political tension, rendered through his unmistakable visual language of distortion, symbolism, and theatrical composition. Created in 1973, Liberation: the prisoners are free!, from Peace in Vietnam (Field 73-1D; M&L 1387a) exemplifies Dalí’s later engagement with politically charged and socially reflective subject matter, produced during a period in which he increasingly explored global conflict and human freedom through allegorical imagery. This lithograph, printed in colours and signed and titled in pencil, is numbered from the edition of 300 and was printed by Torrents and published by Fidelity World Arts, Illinois, on vélin de Rives wove paper with full margins. The composition reflects Dalí’s continued fascination with liberation as both a physical and metaphysical concept, aligning with the broader Peace in Vietnam series, which responds to the geopolitical unrest of the era. As with much of Dalí’s print output from this period, the work combines meticulous production standards with his surreal visual language, making it a compelling example of his late-career graphic work. The sheet measures 733 x 562 mm (28 7/8 x 22 1/8 in), unframed, and retains strong presentation quality. Importantly, it bears the Dalí Trade authentication inscription and signature in pencil verso, dated 11/23/23, further supporting its provenance and collectability.
