About the Item

Lithograph on paper realized in 1862. Hand colored. The artwork belongs to the Suite Uses and customs of all the peoples of the universe: " History of the government, of the laws, of the militia, of the religion of all the nations from the most remote times up to the present day". A finely executed hand-colored engraving inspired by ancient Greek vase painting, depicting regal female figures arranged in two horizontal friezes. The upper register shows mythological or courtly women accompanied by symbolic attributes—mirrors, staffs, and ritual objects—while the lower register presents elegantly draped queens or noblewomen in varied stances, emphasizing the refinement of classical costume and posture. Printed in the characteristic black-ground, terracotta-figure style associated with neoclassical antiquarian publications, the composition reflects early 19th-century scholarly interest in classical dress, ceremony, and iconography. The figures are rendered with clarity and restraint, highlighting flowing garments, ornamental borders, and stylized gestures derived from ancient sources. The sheet bears its original Italian title beneath the image and is framed by decorative Greek-key and palmette borders. Subtle toning, scattered foxing, and minor age wear are consistent with period impressions and do not detract from the overall visual appeal. An elegant and historically evocative print, appealing to collectors of neoclassical engravings, classical costume studies, and antiquarian illustrations of ancient mythology and court life.
