Lithograph on paper realized in 1862. Hand colored. The artwork belongs to the Suite Uses and customs of all the peoples of the universe: " History of the government, of the laws, of the militia, of the religion of all the nations from the most remote times up to the present day". An instructive and visually striking antiquarian plate depicting classical warriors and military accoutrements, presented in a didactic arrangement characteristic of late Enlightenment historical illustration. The composition combines standing figures of armed soldiers with a carefully articulated display of helmets, shields, armor fragments, and ceremonial instruments, including trumpets and spears. Each element is rendered with precision, emphasizing both functional design and decorative detail, from crested helmets and embossed cuirasses to circular shields with central bosses. Executed in fine engraved line and delicately hand-colored in muted greens, terracotta reds, and ochres, the print reflects the period’s fascination with classical antiquity and its systematic study.
