About the Item

Lithograph on paper realized in 1862. Hand colored. The artwork belongs to the Suite Uses and customs of all the peoples of the universe: " History of the government, of the laws, of the militia, of the religion of all the nations from the most remote times up to the present day". Rectangular composition inspired by ancient Greek black-figure pottery, depicting a dynamic Pyrrhic dance, the martial ritual dance traditionally associated with armed warriors of classical antiquity. Against a deep black ground, ochre-toned figures are rendered in crisp silhouette, evoking Attic vase painting of the 5th century BC. The scene features male and female figures in animated poses, some wielding shields and spears, others engaged in acrobatic or ritual gestures, interspersed with symbolic objects including amphorae, musical instruments, and architectural motifs. The composition reflects the Neoclassical fascination with antiquity and the revival of ancient Greek iconography prevalent in European scholarly and artistic circles during the late Enlightenment period. Executed with precision linework and restrained colouring, the print demonstrates both archaeological interest and decorative intent. With its strong graphic impact and classical subject matter, this engraving would have appealed to collectors, academicians, and Grand Tour travellers seeking visual interpretations of ancient culture. A fine example of Neoclassical antiquarian illustration bridging art history and early archaeological study. Condition: Generally good, with light age toning and minor scattered foxing consistent with age. Margins preserved; colours fresh.
