About the Item

Etching on paper published by S. Merigot, London, in 1796. A finely executed late eighteenth-century topographical engraving depicting the celebrated Temple of Bacchus at Baalbek, Lebanon, one of the most renowned monuments of the ancient Roman world. Issued in London by the publisher S. Merigot on 1 March 1796, the print reflects the growing European fascination with classical antiquity and the monumental ruins of the Near East during the age of Grand Tour travel and archaeological discovery. The composition presents the temple as a romantic architectural relic set within a luxuriant landscape. Towering Corinthian columns and the imposing façade emerge from dense woodland, while small staffage figures animate the foreground, emphasizing the scale and grandeur of the ancient structure. The artist balances archaeological interest with picturesque sensibility, framing the monument within an idyllic natural setting characteristic of late Georgian landscape engraving. Executed with subtle tonal gradations and delicate handling of light and shadow, the print demonstrates the high technical standards of British reproductive engraving at the close of the eighteenth century. The dramatic contrasts between the sunlit architecture and the surrounding foliage lend the scene both monumentality and atmosphere, transforming the archaeological subject into a work of considerable visual appeal. Produced during a period when engravings served as an important vehicle for disseminating knowledge of distant antiquities, this print would have appealed to collectors, travellers, and scholars interested in the classical heritage of the Eastern Mediterranean. Today it remains an evocative example of early archaeological and picturesque printmaking. Very good overall condition. Light age toning and minor handling wear to the margins, with scattered pale foxing and mount remnants visible at the upper edge. The engraved image remains well preserved with strong tonal contrast and clear impression.
