About the Item

A nice rare woodcut by the noted American Artist Will Barnet. This woodcut is from 1939 and is titled and pencil signed on the base "Early Morning", Will Barnet. Another piece in this rare small edition of 30 is in the collection of the Smithsonian. Will Barnet’s earliest prints were primarily concerned with the plight of the worker during the Depression. By the mid-1930s, however, marriage and the birth of his first child provided a new and lasting fascination with domesticity. Early Morning is indicative of this new phase, with its thick expressive lines, dynamic yet balanced composition, and focus on intimate scenes of family life. It was awarded prizes by the Print Club of Philadelphia and the First National Print Exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum.
