About the Item

Gay Head Cliffs, a 1935 lithograph by Adolf Dehn (1895-1968), depicts a National Landmark in Aquinnah, Martha's Vineyard, MA. Somehow Dehn has managed to capture the very texture of these clay ledges using black ink and chine colle. This print marvelously conveys the sense and feeling of this remarkable geographical phenomenon. .Dehn attended the Minneapolis School of Art where he met colleague Wanda Gag. Amazingly they were both awarded scholarships to the Art Students League in 1917. Dehn made his first lithograph, ironically titled The Harvest, in 1921, printed by George Miller. His career was off! In 1921 his lithographs were featured in his first one-man show, at the Weyhe Gallery. Eventually his subjects fell into two camps: caricatures or spoofs – preferably of high society types, or elegantly composed landscapes. While he remained a New Yorker, he was also a world traveler who was never at loss for material. Dehn was an academician of the National Academy of Design, a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and twice a recipient of Guggenheim Fellowships. He taught at both the Broadmoor Art Academy and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, and was a founding member of the gallery Associated American Artists, NYC, all in the 1930s. This subject is from an edition of 40 and is signed, titled, and numbered, in pencil. The reference is Lumsdaine/O'Sullivan 289.
