About the Item

Charles Donker Pinecone I 19 x 19,03 (Framed included in price, 44 x 41 cm) Etching on paper The etchings of Charles Donker are admired and collected both in the Netherlands and abroad. Not only by enthusiasts and critics, but especially by fellow artists. In the book The Etchings of Charles Donker, presented at the Centraal Museum in Utrecht in 2020 on the occasion of the etcher’s 80th birthday, artist Simon Koene wrote: “If I may let my heart speak, with Donker an etcher has arisen who, with his refined, velvety etchings, evokes a world made more of silence than of spectacle.” Nature, the outdoors, and also materials from nature have always been his source of inspiration. Subjects such as a pine cone, a fish, a dead animal, twigs, and leaves are recurring and welcome motifs. In addition, there are landscapes and parts of his gardens. Charles Donker shows in his etchings how nature presents itself to him. For more than 40 years, he has preferred to work in his studio near Fort Rhijnauwen. There is no electricity there, only daylight; no luxury, but rather a welcome distance from the bustle of daily life, allowing him to work in peace. Poet Ed Leeflang wrote of this: “However crowded the country may be in reality, however much it may thunder on, Donker’s deserted places, delicate trees, or stately portrait of the nightjar breathe a kind of unspoiled silence and attentiveness that perhaps can now only be found in art itself. (…)” Special Being able to represent Charles Donker at Galerie Bonnard is something we consider a special privilege. The work of this Dutch artist is collected and exhibited worldwide. In the studios of many artists we visit, we see works by this etcher hanging on the wall, often even an entire collection. He is admired by fellow artists for his subtle rendering of the nuances of nature. His love for the subject and his attention to what he wants to express in the work radiate from the etchings. This portrait by PP Producties and the interview Gijsbert van der Wal conducted with him for De Avonden provide a wonderful impression of this artist. We are showing both on this page.
