About the Item

DAVID ROBERTS RA 1796 - 1864 Bazaar of The Coppersmiths, Cairo First Edition lithograph Full plate: 230 Presented in a acid free mount We pride ourselves in the hand colouring of our antique David Roberts lithographs. We have in stock all 250 from the set from David Roberts travels. David Roberts's Bazaar of the Coppersmiths, Cairo captures the bustling street life and architectural details of 19th-century Cairo with a documentary-like precision. The artwork exists in several forms, including a large-scale oil painting from 1842 and a lithograph from his famous six-volume series, The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, published between 1842 and 1849. Roberts's time in Egypt from 1838 to 1839 yielded the sketches for this and many other works. The scene is set in the Sharia al-Nahhasin, the coppersmiths' quarter, which was part of the historic main street of Fatimid Cairo. Roberts creates a strong sense of depth, with figures in the foreground drawing the eye toward the impressive architecture of the city. Architectural elements frame the market, including ornate wooden balconies and latticed windows. In the center of the image stands the Sabil-Kuttab of Khusraw Pasha, while to the left is the Madrasa of Baybars, which was destroyed in 1874. Roberts's depiction is therefore a valuable historical record of this lost building. Behind these structures rises the distinctive minaret of the Madrasa-Mausoleum of al-Salih Nagm al-Din Ayyub
