About the Item

PLAINS OF JUPITER is a hand drawn color lithograph by the British painter Harold Hitchcock printed using hand lithography on archival Arches paper 100% acid free. In the dreamy, romantic imaginary landscape of PLAINS OF JUPITER, the viewer is presented with a mythological world of idealized beauty, suffused in light, a fantastical landscape with ancient architectural ruins, several boats and ships moored in an ancient port, gentle waves ripple the water, fluffy pom-pom like treetops, birds flying on the left, a group of children resting in beneath the cool shade of a huge golden brown, gnarly rooted tree, the hazy sunlight filtering through a pastel blue and pink colored sky, a towering rocky mountain rising to the sun on the right. Print size - 26 x 29 inches, full bleed image, no margins, unframed, excellent condition, pencil signed by Harold Hitchcock, superb craftsmanship, fine impression. Edition size - 350, plus proofs Year published - 1988 Printer - J K Fine Art Editions Co. NY A descendant of British artist George Stubbs, Harold Hitchcock(1914-2009) painted his first portrait at age 14. With only minimal formal training, he is basically a self-taught artist. In his late teens he took evening classes at the Ruskin Art College. He also studied the Old Masters. In order to earn a living, he began doing commercial artwork. Over the years his work has evolved from realism to surrealistic landscapes with the presence of human forms that are sometimes merely suggested. About painting Hitchcock said: "It's an instinctive thing"; "It's an interpretation of an inner vision." Hitchcock's paintings are in the permanent collections of London's Victoria and Albert Museum, the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow, and the Yale Center for British Arts, to name a few.

JIM BUCKELS Artist statement- "On one level, I think of myself as a decorative artisan, or at best a scene painter. I don't mind this distinction, because many of my heroes never achieved much more. It's a modest but honorable aspiration. The artists who have influenced me are quite dissimilar and usually less prominent in the pantheon of art history: Canaletto, the Flemish scene painters, the Hudson River artists...
