Nason, Thomas. LANDSCAPE WITH SHEEP. BPL 178. Chiaroscuro woodcut printed from three blocks, 1935. Edition of 75, numbered "49/75," signed in pencil, and titled in pencil at the bottom edge of the sheet. 4 7/8 x 6 1/2 inches (image), 9 x 12 inches (sheet). In excellent condition.
Nason was a master of the chiaroscuro woodcut technique, originally developed during the Renaissance and seen mostly in old master prints. The concept is to achieve depth of tonality and shading by using several blocks to create the image and give it a sense of depth and coloration.
