About the Item

This is a complete set of original chromolithograph prints, actually made in 1882 by the United States Geological Survey. The set includes, Part I Looking East, Part II looking South, Part III Looking West. These antique prints were produced by the United States Geologic Survey for Clarence Dutton's work, "Tertiary History of the Grand Cañon District with Atlas, by Clarence E. Dutton, 1882" Surveying the Grand Canyon Created by an act of Congress in 1879 to map the western territories of the United States, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) issued its first publication—a report on the Grand Canyon—in 1882. The author, Clarence E. Dutton, a geologist and army officer, had begun surveying the rugged region of the Colorado Plateau as an associate of explorer John Wesley Powell in 1875. Dutton’s monograph on the Grand Canyon inaugurated a series of USGS studies of the geology, paleontology, and related aspects of the nation’s public lands. The artist, William Henry Holmes, "First hired by the Smithsonian in 1871, topographical illustrator William Henry Holmes was well known for paintings that were described as "orgies of pure color." His knowledge of geology, archaeology, anthropology, and ethnology made him a master in the scientific documentation of landscapes. His achievements included important publications on Native American cultures in prehistory and on Mayan civilization at Chichen Itza. He began his career as an artist for scientific expeditions to the American West in the 1870s, where he became interested in Native American archeology. In an impressive combination of art and science, Holmes was curator of anthropology for the Smithsonian (1897-1932) while also serving as curator and director of the emerging National Gallery of Art (1906-1932), now the National Museum of American Art."
