About the Item

The Yellow Umbrellas is a lithograph on paper with an image size of 2.75 x 4.25 inches, inititaled 'LK' lower right and annotated lower left, framed in a gold-tone classic 'reed and ribbon' moulding. Numbered 179/295, from the edition of 325 (there were also 25 AP and 5 HC). Since her childhood in Russia, Kondakova has been fascinated by traditional art and by a sense of spiritual transcendence. Her style is derived from her early work in egg tempera – the medium of medieval painters. Born in Russia, Kondakova immigrated to the United States in 1991. A graduate of the Grabar Center in Moscow, she also attended Russia’s School of the Sacred Arts, the Moscow Pedagogical Institute, and the Moscow Art Institute. The ability to paint in the small format of her miniature paintings is no easy task, but Kondakova has clearly mastered it. Fascinated with the painted icons of the Russian Orthodox Church, she studied the discipline of professional icon painting at the Cathedral of St. Alexis in Moscow, where she began her career making miniature paintings. The attention to detail associated with that training manifests itself in these works, awaiting us in every intricately detailed nook and cranny. Even the smallest fragment of a large Kondakova painting may be seen as a complete work, thanks to the artist’s unusual ability to reveal details brilliantly through jewel-like colors, and with quite unusual luminosity. Her miniature lithographs were created by the uncompromising printer, Art Estampe of Paris, who still uses the centuries old method of stone lithography. True to tradition, great pride was taken in the extensive participation of the artist in the entire printmaking process. Each lithograph was hand-pulled in an edition of 325 and initialed by the Kondakova.
