About the Item

This bold circa 1895 poster by John Hassall for Terry’s Theatre – The White Knight is a striking example of early modern poster design in Britain, where clarity, humor, and strong visual impact take precedence over elaborate decoration. At the center stands a stylized knight in armor, rendered in a simplified, almost cartoon-like manner. Holding a long lance and shield, the figure is immediately legible, even from a distance—a key requirement for effective street advertising. The character likely refers to The White Knight, a theatrical production associated with actor-manager Edward Terry, whose name appears prominently at the bottom. Hassall’s approach is notably modern for its time. Rather than filling the space with intricate detail, he employs flat areas of color, strong outlines, and a limited palette dominated by vivid orange, black, and white. This reduction of visual elements enhances readability and gives the poster a graphic power that anticipates 20th-century advertising design. The composition is carefully structured: the knight occupies the central vertical axis, while a bold black horizontal band cuts across the image, anchoring the figure and creating a dynamic contrast with the bright background. The typography is equally assertive, with “THE WHITE KNIGHT” set in large, blocky letters that command attention. Hassall was known for his ability to combine humor and accessibility with effective design, and this poster reflects that talent. The knight, while heroic, has a slightly exaggerated and approachable quality, making the image both engaging and memorable. Printed for a London audience, the poster reflects the competitive world of late Victorian theatre, where visual advertising played a crucial role in attracting crowds. Its clarity and immediacy would have made it highly effective in the busy urban environment. Today, this work stands as a key example of John Hassall’s contribution to poster art—marking a shift toward simplicity, boldness, and mass communication that would define modern graphic design in the decades to follow. 1900 Three-Sheet Theater Poster

1900 Three-Sheet Theater Poster

This was an estate find and part of a beautiful collection of rare excellent turn of the century posters. They were hidden away for over 100 years. This is a rare and impressive 3 sheet poster that is 7 foot tall. It make quite a statement. About the poster: You'd think that a play called "The New Baby" might feature said child in its promotional material. But here's the thing - there really isn't a baby at the centre of the comedy, and that's the crux of this entertainment. The plot concerns a husband who is so bored with country life that he dreams up the idea of having an illegitimate son in London as a way to get into town for an occasional 'night off'. When his wife decides that the child should be adopted, the expected comic tissue of falsehoods and misunderstandings frays and hilarity ensues. Adapted from German by A. Bourchier, the farce opened in London in 1896 to what a local critic termed 'much mirth'. Several years later, when the play had crossed the Atlantic and entered the repertory of David de Wolf cleverly called the Baby's chaperone on the poster and his troupe of traveling players, that understated review was translated into the more American howling success. The cast and director would've been totally unfamiliar with the British hinterlands, so this splendid design concentrates on the hi-jinks of the characters and their situation. At the start of the 20th century, America was in the full glory of its cultural adolescence, bursting with energy and optimism. In 1900 in New York there were 33 legitimate Broadway theaters...
