About the Item

This impressive 1849 engraving depicts Franz Joseph I, based on a composition by the Austrian painter Josef Heicke. Created at the beginning of Franz Joseph’s reign, the print celebrates the young emperor as a commanding military figure and symbol of imperial authority. The composition presents Franz Joseph on horseback at the head of a group of cavalry officers. The emperor rides a white horse, placing him visually at the center of the scene, while other mounted officers accompany him in formation. Their elaborate uniforms, decorated with plumed helmets and ceremonial attire, emphasize the prestige and discipline of the imperial army. The arrangement conveys movement and unity, portraying the emperor as both leader and protector of the empire. At the bottom of the engraving appears the inscription “Wahlspruch Seiner Majestät Kaiser Franz Josef I.”, referring to the emperor’s motto. Such inscriptions were common in nineteenth-century imperial portrait prints, reinforcing the symbolic message of loyalty and devotion to the monarch. Franz Joseph I ascended the throne in 1848, during a turbulent period marked by revolutions across Europe and political upheaval within the Austrian Empire.
