About the Item

This 1943 advertising poster by Raymond Savignac promotes Armagnac Ryst, a French brandy produced in the region of Gers, with the town of Condom indicated at the bottom. Created during the years of the World War II, the poster already reveals the distinctive visual language that would later make Savignac one of the most important figures in 20th-century advertising design. The composition is strikingly simple and playful. A stylized, almost childlike figure sits in profile, extending an arm toward a floating bottle of Armagnac, accompanied by three stars that suggest quality or excellence. Behind the figure, a bold shadow creates a second silhouette, introducing a subtle duality—perhaps hinting at the transformation brought about by the drink. Another bottle appears near the figure’s leg, reinforcing the product’s presence while maintaining a balanced composition. Savignac’s approach breaks with more traditional, text-heavy advertising. Instead of detailed realism, he relies on flat colors, simplified shapes, and visual humor. The character’s exaggerated proportions and relaxed posture create an immediate, accessible image that communicates pleasure and ease without the need for complex explanation. This economy of means—saying more with less—would become a hallmark of his later work. The poster also reflects a broader shift in advertising during the mid-20th century. Rather than merely describing a product, it creates a visual idea or mood. Here, Armagnac is associated with warmth, enjoyment, and a certain lighthearted sophistication, conveyed through the minimal yet expressive design. Despite being created in a period marked by constraint and uncertainty, the poster projects a sense of calm and quiet indulgence. It stands as an early example of Savignac’s talent for transforming everyday products into memorable visual symbols. Ultimately, Armagnac Ryst illustrates the emergence of a modern advertising language in France—one that privileges clarity, wit, and strong graphic identity—while firmly rooting the product in its regional heritage. Original small format poster Affiches Paul Mohr, 1932. Archival linen backed in excellent condition, ready to frame. The rare Paul Mohr posters are incredibly elusive; many have had only one remaining known copy survive. Printing method: Helio-Typo or Typelo. Before television, beautiful lithographs adorn the streets and walls of Paris and other European cities. Art for the street, art for the public. Weather and rain would destroy these works of art by renowned artists, only to be replaced. The artist: Paul Gustave Mohr, a French Avant-garde poster designer from the Art Deco period was born Sept. 4, 1890 in Ham, France and died on April 13, 1959 in Paris. He lived most of his life in Paris, and then settled in the small town of Asnieres, France, just outside of Paris. He attended the Sorbonne University, as well as several art schools. During World War I, he was a pilot in the French Army from 1914-1917. Paul Mohr married Jeanne Levy in 1917 and they had three daughters: Helene, Genevieve, and Jacqueline. As an artist, he designed advertising posters from 1920 to 1940. His posters advertised Wonder cycles, Dainty cycles, Lustucru pasta, Banania sugar, Bremsit brakes, Champigneulles beer, L'Union beer, Dubonnet wine, as well as shoes and ham.
