Stone and Press Gallery is excited to offer several works in celebration of the LGBTQ community. Three women strolling on a beach. This impression is one of the rare impressions printed monochromatically. Hirsch natural inclination was to print in lack and white but reprinted most impressions of this edition in six colors. This a rare black and white variant. Joseph Hirsch created this lithograph in 1966 in an edition of 150. Joseph Hirsch was a member of the American Academy-Institute of Arts and Letters and a well-known realistic artist who came to national attention as a muralist for the Federal Works Progress Administration in the 1930's. Mr. Hirsch was described by the Kennedy gallery as ''an allegorical, figurative, still-life and portrait painter who also worked as a draftsman.'' Of his own work, Mr. Hirsch wrote: ''I believe that some day the fabric of art will be threaded with morality, enabling us to distinguish evil from good. Today, this is unthinkable, in the delightful art world where, excepting censorship, anything goes. But anything goes does not accord with the more discriminating ethics of our civilized code which rules out what is socially destructive.'' Mr. Hirsch is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney in New York; the National Gallery, the Corcoran and the Hirshhorn in Washington; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and in many major collections in the United States. Joseph Hirsch was born on April 25, 1910 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began to study art at age 17. Hirsch studied at the Philadelphia Museum School, with Henry Hensche in Provincetown, Mass., and with George Luks in New York. In addition to formal study, Hirsch traveled extensively, including a five-year stay in France. He participated in the Works Project Administration in the easel painting division, with occasional work in the mural division, where he painted murals in the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Building and the Municipal Court. During World War II, Joseph Hirsch took part in the war effort, as an artist war correspondent, recording significant battles and events. He taught at the Chicago Art Institute, the American Art School, University of Utah, and had a significant tenure at the Art Students League in New York. He also won many awards, among them were a fellowship at the American Academy in Rome, the Walter Lippincott Prize, First Prize at the New York World's Fair (1939), the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (1942, 1943), and the Fulbright Fellowship (1949). In 1954 he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member and became a full Academician in 1958 Early in his career, Hirsch was introduced to the movement of Social Realism through George Luks, who was one of "The Eight". This group of painters, at the beginning of the century, chose to depict ordinary and everyday scenes. From this movement stemmed the Social Realism genre of the 1920s and 1930s. Particularly during the Great Depression, social consciousness, and commentary were important components of the movement, dictating subject matter. Social commentary was the backbone for the majority of Joseph Hirsch's paintings. In ‘American Artist,’ Dianne Cochrane wrote of him: ''He has often used canvas to make effective social statements. Many of his best-known paintings are indictments of society's insensitivities or frightening scenes of corruption. His compassionate treatment of the little man demonstrates a desire to portray the human condition sympathetically.'' During World War II, Mr. Hirsch went to the South Pacific, North Africa and Italy as an artist-correspondent for the Navy, and his paintings and drawings are in the Museum of Military History. He recently protested to a magazine that had used one of his wartime hospital paintings to illustrate an article justifying the use of the atomic bomb. In Major Collections. Hirsch's work is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney in New York; the National Gallery, the Corcoran and the Hirshhorn in Washington; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and in many major collections in the United States. He was a founding member and the first treasurer of Artists Equity, an association designed to protect the rights and interests of artists. He was elected to membership in the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1967, and was also a trustee of the Century Association. Joseph Hirsch died in New York, NY on September 21, 1981.

Mat: 16"H x 12"W Paper: 10 1/2"H x 8"W Image:9 1/4"H x 6 1/2"W Jim Smyth has studied at the Academia de Belle Arti in Fiorenza, Italy, Ecole des BeauxArts in Geneva, New York Academy, and the Art Students League. He is also a graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in Fine Art. Although academically trained, Smyth practices and teaches a more impressionistic style of painting, focusing on the Alla Prima technique. He is particularly knowledgeable about drawing, perspective, color theory and the human figure, his passion. Smyth, with extensive academic knowledge, has a profound love of all human representations as illustrated by his humorous quick sketches from life. He also practices and teaches oil painting and pastels. When not in Provence, or Southeastern France, Smyth teaches intensely in art schools, art centers and several colleges in the Bay Area. He is a beloved instructor and his classes fill in quickly as he is very knowledgeable. On his return to the United States, he began studying with Mr. Alanson Appleton at the College of San Mateo, San Mateo, California. Smyth was a founding member of the Appletree Etchers, Inc., an etching print shop organized by Mr. Appleton and his students to develop and promote color intaglio. Smyth served as Master Printer at the studio for many years perfecting the techniques of intaglio and developing the color theories of Mr. Appleton as applied to the deeply etched plate. Smyth received his degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972 and holds the California Community College Certificate and an Adult Education Certificate. Smyth was invited to teach "Anatomy for Artists" at Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, California, as a result of his many years of dissection of the cadaver and developed the course of study of Perspective for the college. During this period, he began teaching Life Drawing at the Pacific Art League of Palo Alto, Palo Alto, California. During the following thirty years Smyth has taught an average of twelve classes per week at the Pacific Art League of Palo Alto, the Palo Alto Art Center and the Burlingame Recreation Department among others in all phases of drawing and painting. He has conducted many workshops for the California Academy of Painters in many aspects of drawing and painting. Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor of Drawing at the College of San Mateo, San Mateo, California. He is an authority on the materials of painting and drawing, techniques of traditional drawing and painting, color theory, perspective and anatomy for artists. In his career in Life Drawing, Smyth has made over two hundred thousand drawings from the model. In addition to studies at Berkeley, Smyth has studied at the College of San Mateo, Foothill College, De Anza College, Mission College, and West Valley College, all in California. One of the pivotal points in his career was studying with Mr. Maynard Dixon Stewart at the University of San Jose, California. He spent a year at the New York Academy of Art where he was offered a full scholarship and at the Art Students League of New York.
