About the Item

A fine limited edition silver screenprint of Jacqueline Kennedy (Jackie I) by well known American artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987). Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, PA, studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and went on to New York City where he became an illustrator until 1960, when he began making paintings based on comic strips characters such as Popeye, Dick Tracy, and Superman. He turned from the prevailing abstract expressionist styles and the emphasis on the artist’s emotion to a hard-line realism, using many common images associated with the popular media such as a Campbell soup can or a Coca Cola bottle or Brillo pad. The first images were handpainted, but many were reproduced with a silk screen process. He became the first artist to utilize the screenprint medium to elevate both common and famous photographic images from popular culture to fine art success. In 1964, Warhol began making sculptures, often with labels from supermarkets, and in the 1970s, he turned to portraits, some of the most famous being Jackie Kennedy, Elvis Presley, Mao Zedong, and Marilyn Monroe. These images reflected his fascination with the topic of death, something he carried into a series called Death and Disaster. Many celebrities and socialites regarded it as a notch “up-the-ladder” of social recognition to be painted by Warhol. Jackie I was created by Andy Warhol at the inception of his power and influence on the art world. A most desirable image of Jacqueline Kennedy smiling moments before her husband, President John F. Kennedy’s tragic assassination, Jackie I utilizes a LIFE Magazine photograph as source material, exemplifying the artist’s re-purposing well-known imagery as artistic subject matter. Silver screenprint on paper, stamped on verso Andy Warhol (copy of stamp attached), and hand numbered on verso 174/200, matted and framed under plexiglass in a modern white painted wooden frame. Not examined out of frame. Dimensions: 24 in H x 20 in W, actual; 29.25 in H x 25 in W x 1.75 in D. Includes original portfolio with Christie’s auction house labels. Provenance: Acquired from the estate of Mica Ertegun through Christie's. Mica was a philanthropist and interior designer, and was married to the well known record executive Ahmet Ertegun. Ref: 12634
