This is a premier example of Lucien Jonas’s (1880 – 1947) iconic 1917 lithograph, distinguished as a limited deluxe edition specifically produced for high-level fundraising during the Great War. While the standard version of this poster was mass-produced for public walls and included a text panel at the bottom, this rare "textless" variant was created exclusively for sale to private donors and collectors to raise vital funds for the French colonial troops. The "Special Proofs": Historical records and museum descriptions confirm that while the standard posters were "not to be sold" (Cette affiche ne peut être vendue), "special proofs" (épreuves spéciales) were sold to benefit the "Journée" (the fundraising day). Purchased through the prestigious Maison Devambez in Paris, these special proofs were often the only versions legally available for private ownership at the time, as the standard propaganda posters were strictly marked "not for sale".
