Picasso 1957 exhibition poster Pâtes Blanches: Empreintes Originales

By Pablo Picasso

Located in PARIS, FR

The 1957 original exhibition poster titled Pâtes Blanches: Empreintes Originales éditées par Madoura et Gravures Rares by Pablo Picasso is a significant piece that reflects the artist's deep involvement with ceramic art and printmaking during that period. The poster was created to promote an exhibition at Galerie 65 in Cannes, France, showcasing Picasso’s ceramics and rare engravings, with a particular focus on his work with pâtes blanches, or white clay. By the late 1940s, Picasso had become increasingly involved with ceramics, producing a vast number of pieces at the Madoura pottery studio in Vallauris, France. The studio, owned by Georges and Suzanne Ramié, became a creative haven for Picasso, where he could explore new forms of expression beyond painting and sculpture. His work with ceramics brought forth a unique blend of classical forms and modernist abstraction, often infusing traditional pottery with his distinctive artistic style. The term pâtes blanches refers to the white earthenware clay that Picasso used for creating his ceramic pieces. This material allowed him to experiment with various textures and finishes, which he combined with his characteristic line work and engraving techniques. The poster advertises this innovative work, highlighting the original prints and rare engravings that were part of the exhibition. The exhibition at Galerie 65 in Cannes ran throughout the summer of 1957 and offered art lovers and collectors the opportunity to view and acquire some of Picasso's rarest ceramic works and prints. It was a testament to Picasso's versatility as an artist, showcasing his ability to transcend different mediums while maintaining the boldness and originality that defined his career. The poster itself, with Picasso's handwritten details and a depiction of one of his engravings, serves as both a promotional tool and a work of art in its own right. It reflects Picasso's personal touch and his deep connection to the work he produced during this period. Today, this exhibition poster remains a coveted item for collectors of Picasso’s works and 20th-century art, representing a unique moment in Picasso's extensive and varied artistic journey. Fernand Leger, The Two Figures, from Derriere le miroir, 1955 (after)

By Fernand Léger

Located in Southampton, NY

This exquisite lithograph after Fernand Leger (1881–1955), titled Le deux figures (The Two Figures), from the folio Derriere le miroir, No. 79-81, originates from the 1955 edition published by Maeght Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1955. This composition exemplifies Leger’s rhythmic balance of color, form, and movement, translating the mechanical vitality of modern life into a harmonious, humanized geometry. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 15 x 11 inches. Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, Paris. Artwork Details: Artist: After Fernand Leger (1881–1955) Title: Le deux figures (The Two Figures), from the folio Derriere le miroir, No. 79-81 Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 15 x 11 inches (38.1 x 27.94 cm) Inscription: Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued Date: 1955 Publisher: Maeght Editeur, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the folio Derriere le miroir, No. 79-81, published by Maeght Editeur, Paris; printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1955 About the Publication: Derriere le miroir (Behind the Mirror) was one of the most important art publications of the 20th century, created and published by Maeght Editeur in Paris from 1946 to 1982. Founded by the visionary art dealer and publisher Aime Maeght, the series served as both an exhibition catalogue and a work of art in its own right, uniting original lithographs by leading modern and contemporary artists with critical essays, poetry, and design of the highest quality. Printed by master lithographers such as Mourlot Freres and Arte, Derriere le miroir became synonymous with the artistic vanguard of postwar Europe. Each issue was devoted to a single artist or theme and published to accompany exhibitions at the Galerie Maeght in Paris, featuring works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Alexander Calder, Fernand Leger, and Alberto Giacometti, among others. The publication reflected Maeght's belief that art should be both accessible and elevated—an ideal realized through its luxurious production values, meticulous printing, and collaboration with the greatest creative minds of its time. About the Artist: Fernand Leger (1881–1955) was a visionary French painter, sculptor, designer, and filmmaker whose groundbreaking fusion of modern industry, vivid color, and geometric form transformed the course of 20th-century art. Born in Argentan, Normandy, Leger began as an architectural draftsman before studying at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he absorbed the lessons of Paul Cezanne’s structural rigor and the revolutionary ideas of Cubism. Alongside Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, he became one of the leading innovators of the avant-garde, yet his work stood apart through its embrace of mechanical rhythm, bold contrasts, and industrial modernity—earning him the title “the painter of the machine age.” His art celebrated the beauty of technology, urban life, and the human form rendered in dynamic, interlocking cylinders and planes, evoking the pulse of the modern world. Immersed in the vibrant Parisian art scene, Leger worked in dialogue with peers and contemporaries such as Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, all of whom shared his commitment to innovation and the reimagining of artistic expression. Beyond painting, Leger’s creative reach extended into film, design, and monumental public art—his 1924 collaboration on Ballet Mecanique with Dudley Murphy and Man Ray remains a landmark of avant-garde cinema. His later works evolved toward greater clarity and monumentality, celebrating the unity of form, color, and humanity through large-scale murals and mosaics that bridged fine art and architecture. Leger’s synthesis of Cubism, Futurism, and abstraction paved the way for movements such as Pop Art and influenced generations of artists including Roy Lichtenstein, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Indiana, and Alexander Calder, who admired his fusion of structure, energy, and optimism. Today, his works are prized by major museums and collectors worldwide for their bold visual power and enduring modernity. His highest auction record was achieved by La femme en rouge et vert (1914), which sold for 39,241,000 USD at Sotheby’s, New York, on May 7, 2008. After Fernand Leger Le deux figures 1955, Leger Derriere le miroir No. 79-81, Leger Mourlot...

Thompson, Wichita Art Museum, 2022 (back cover). Impressions of this work are held in the following collections: Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Art Institute of Chicago, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (De Young), Harvard Art Museums, Library of Congress, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Terra Foundation for American Art, University of Oregon Museum of Art. ABOUT THE ARTIST Helen Hyde (1868-1919) was a pioneer American artist best known for advancing Japanese woodblock printmaking in the United States and for bridging Western and Japanese artistic traditions. Hyde was born in Lima, New York, but after her father died in 1872, her family relocated to Oakland, California, where she spent much of her youth. Hyde pursued formal art education in the United States and Europe. She enrolled in the San Francisco School of Design, where she took classes from the Impressionist painter Emil Carlsen; two years later, she transferred to the Art Students League in New York, studying there with Kenyon Cox. Eager to expand her artistic repertoire, Hyde traveled to Europe, studying under Franz Skarbina in Berlin and Raphael Collin in Paris. While in Paris, she first encountered Japanese ukiyo-e prints, sparking a lifelong fascination with Japanese aesthetics. After ten years of study, Hyde returned to San Francisco, where she continued to paint and began to exhibit her work. Hyde learned to etch from her friend Josephine Hyde in about 1885. Her first plates, which she etched herself but had professionally printed, represented children. On sketching expeditions, she sought out quaint subjects for her etchings and watercolors. In 1897, Hyde made her first color etchings—inked á la poupée (applying different ink colors to a single printing plate)—which became the basis for her early reputation. She also enjoyed success as a book illustrator, and her images sometimes depicted the children of Chinatown. After her mother died in 1899, Hyde sailed to Japan, accompanied by her friend Josephine, where she would reside, with only brief interruptions, until 1914. For over three years, she studied classical Japanese ink painting with the ninth and last master of the great Kano school of painters, Kano Tomonobu. She also studied with Emil Orlik, an Austrian artist working in Tokyo. Orlik sought to renew the old ukiyo-e tradition in what became the shin hanga “new woodcut prints” art movement. She immersed herself in the study of traditional Japanese printmaking techniques, apprenticing with master printer Kanō Tomonobu. Hyde adopted Japanese tools, materials, and techniques, choosing to employ the traditional Japanese system of using craftsmen to cut the multiple blocks and execute the exacting color printing of the images she created. Her lyrical works often depicted scenes of family domesticity, particularly focusing on women and children, rendered in delicate lines and muted colors. Through her distinctive fusion of East and West, Hyde’s contributions to Western printmaking were groundbreaking. At a time when few Western women ventured to Japan, she mastered its artistic traditions and emerged as a significant figure in the international art scene. Suffering from poor health, she returned to the United States in 1914, moving to Chicago. Having found restored health and new inspiration during an extended trip to Mexico in 1911, Hyde continued to seek out warmer climates and new subject matter. During the winter of 1916, Hyde was a houseguest at Chicora Wood, the Georgetown, South Carolina, plantation illustrated by Alice Ravenel Huger Smith in Elizabeth Allston Pringle’s 1914 book A Woman Rice Planter. The Lowcountry was a revelation for Hyde. She temporarily put aside her woodcuts and began creating sketches and intaglio etchings of Southern genre scenes and African Americans at work. During her stay, Hyde encouraged Smith’s burgeoning interest in Japanese printmaking and later helped facilitate an exhibition of Smith’s prints at the Art Institute of Chicago. During World War I, Hyde designed posters for the Red Cross and produced color prints extolling the virtues of home-front diligence. In ill health, Hyde traveled to be near her sister in Pasadena a few weeks before her death on May 13, 1919. She was buried in the family plot near Oakland, California. Throughout her career, Hyde enjoyed substantial support from galleries and collectors in the States and in London. She exhibited works at the St. Louis Exposition in 1897, the Pan-American Exhibition in Buffalo in 1901, the Tokyo Exhibition for Native Art (where she won first prize for an ink drawing) in 1901, the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exhibition in Seattle in 1909 (received a gold medal for a print), the Newark Museum in 1913, a solo show at the Chicago Art Institute in 1916, and a memorial exhibition in 1920, Detroit Institute of Arts, Color Woodcut Exhibition in 1919, New York Public Library, American Woodblock Prints...
