About the Item

Contemporary Porcelain Jar with Lid, Ceramic Sculpture, 16.5 x 17.5 x 17.5 inch Beth Lo was born in Lafayette, Indiana, to parents who had recently immigrated from China. She studied Art under Rudy Autio and assumed his job as Professor of Ceramics at the University of Montana when he retired in 1985. She has exhibited her work internationally, and has received numerous awards including The University of Montana Provost’s Distinguished Lecturer Award in 2006, a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowship Grant in 1994, the Montana Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship in 1989, and an American Craft Museum Design Award in 1986. Beth was selected as one of the 2009 USA Fellows for United States Artists. Her work in ceramics and mixed media collage revolves primarily around issues of family and her Asian-American background; key elements are cultural marginality and blending, tradition and Westernization, and language and translation. Lo’s work investigates, celebrates, and sometimes satirizes traditional Asian aesthetics.
