About the Item

Pathways of Desire (2009) - block printed, manipulated, stitched, heat-set polyester, cotton thread. This contemporary abstract tapestry is by UK-based contemporary textile artist, Caroline Bartlett, (b. 1954, Zambia). Statement: "Textiles are at the core of my practice, providing the means and materials to process and articulate ideas, but often also acting as the reference point in relation to content. The historical, social and cultural associations of textiles, their significance in relation to touch and their ability to trigger memory become central to ideas.  Imprinting, erasing and reworking, stitching, folding and unfolding become defining characteristics, whilst explorations have also resulted in works which integrate textiles with other media such as porcelain." -Caroline Bartlett

Linda Stein began to produce sculptural tapestries in 2013, in which she combines archival images of a subject with multiple fabrics and leather. Toward Words 1205 is one of Stein's abstract works, in which she repeats the same letters through the artwork: a demonstration of how letters are used toward making words. All the other tapestries from this abstract series are in the Permanent Collection...
