About the Item

Christopher Wade Adams’ smoky blue wall relief reads as a living form suspended between bloom and mutation. Layered, scalloped planes radiate from a dense central core, unfolding like a succulent, a deep-sea organism, or a magnified cellular structure. The sculpture’s undulating edges and subtle asymmetries suggest a process of continuous growth—each lobe emerging in response to the next. Adams’ background in organismic and evolutionary biology informs the work’s conceptual foundation. Rather than modeling a specific natural specimen, he constructs systems of form: recombinations that feel evolutionary, adaptive, and self-organizing. The piece appears less “designed” than developed—an accumulation of gestures that echo biological proliferation and structural interdependence. The smoky blue glaze—distinctly matte rather than glossy—deepens the sculpture’s quiet intensity. Its velvety, light-absorbing surface shifts tonally from deep slate to muted cobalt, settling into crevices and thinning across raised textures. This non-reflective finish heightens the work’s tactile presence, emphasizing its granular, almost cartilaginous skin and reinforcing the sense of organic materiality. Adams’ experimental glazing techniques move beyond traditional ceramic finish, prioritizing surface transformation and physical depth over sheen. Mounted on the wall, the relief casts dynamic shadows that animate its topography. Both intimate and architectonic, the work embodies Adams’ ongoing exploration of biomorphic abstraction—where ceramic becomes a site for evolution, system, and sustained material inquiry.
