CHROMA (Rick Wolfryd) – Lucy, Charlie Brown Series Alteration Art Sculpture Huichol Glass Beadwork Lucy from the Charlie Brown Sculpture Series is part of ALTERATION ART, an ongoing collaborative body of work by Rick Wolfryd (CHROMA)—fine artist and art dealer with over four decades of experience—created in partnership with Mexican Huichol artists and beadwork studios. After more than ten years living and working in Mexico, Wolfryd has developed a deep respect for Huichol artistic traditions and craftsmanship. This series brings together his contemporary vision with the meticulous, meditative process of Huichol glass bead application, resulting in works that bridge popular cultural imagery, fine art, and indigenous technique. Wolfryd’s current focus centers on the use of Huichol glass beadwork as a transformative visual language. Thousands of individually applied beads create a surface that alters perception through rhythm, geometry, and color density. The result is a sculpture that feels simultaneously iconic and re-imagined—familiar in form, yet entirely new in surface and presence. For over twenty years, Wolfryd has explored pixelation, pattern, and abstraction through digital media and drawing. He identifies a natural and compelling parallel between digital pixels and traditional beadwork—both rely on dot-based systems and geometric order to construct imagery. In this way, ALTERATION ART functions as a physical translation of digital aesthetics into hand-crafted, tactile form. Early anthropomorphic drawings and abstract pattern studies in Wolfryd’s work foreshadowed this direction, evolving from manual printmaking to typed illustration, digital pixel compositions, and now fully dimensional sculptural objects. The beadwork surface operates as what the artist describes as “pixels made physical.” Playfully referred to by the artist as “glass beads on steroids”, this body of work represents a bold contemporary extension of Huichol bead traditions into the realm of collectible fine art. At its core, the ALTERATION project is guided by respect and collaboration. It seeks not only to create compelling contemporary artworks, but also to support the visibility, sustainability, and global recognition of Huichol artists and studios through ethical partnership and shared authorship.
