About the Item

18 x 24 x 8 inches styrofoam and venetian plaster Black and white three dimensional floating high contrast wall sculpture with clean lines Dai Ban presents new series of minimalist sculpture, completely reinvented from his signature bronze casts of playful animal figurines. In the process of breaking down the representative form, Ban has traded clay and bronze for simple planes of precision board, styrofoam and venetian plaster. His new choice of materials serve to maintain the lighthearted nature found in the core of his work through the effects of shifting light on color and shadow over various heightened surfaces. Each piece's title, color and position of conjoining planes hints at a subtle story or moment of existence. “Sunsets”, for example, portrays the passage of time with a brilliant blood-orange, changing tone over contrasting levels, alluding to the fading daytime sky. Dai Ban was born in Japan and later studied fine art and sculpture at Tokyo's Musashino Art University. He moved to the United States in 1985 and settled in the Berkshires via New York City, where he now lives and works.

We Were Never Strangers: Minimalist Abstract Dark Metal Wall Sculpture

By Joe Wheaton

Located in Hudson, NY

Minimalist, abstract geometric wall sculpture in dark oxidized metal We Were Never Strangers, made by Joe Wheaton in 2019 30 x 19 x 3.5 inches, oxidized stainless steel Hangs on a French cleat Lightweight, weighs about 5 lbs. Signed, verso Joe Wheaton’s unique sculptural designs welded from dark, oxidized brass or brilliant silver steel showcase a contradictory set of relationships; “beautiful yet menacing, “threatening yet delicate” as described by the artist. Wheaton builds his metal compositions using a language of strokes and patterns. Geometric spears, disks and quadrangles alternate with wispy, sharp edged lines that trail off quietly to an undefined point. This visual sweep can be likened to the art of calligraphy, echoing the artist’s interest in early Asian arts and ceramics, as well as printmaking. This exhibit will include several of Wheaton’s large and small wall sculptures...
