About the Item

This exceptional mid-century modern bronze sculpture titled Chama, created circa 1966 by acclaimed American artist Eduardo Arcenio Chavez, exemplifies the refined balance between organic form and modernist abstraction that defined his sculptural work. Cast in bronze and mounted on its original wooden base, the sculpture features a fluid yet structured composition that reveals Chavez’s masterful understanding of form, weight, and movement. The sculpture’s elegant contours and abstracted shapes create a sense of quiet rhythm and balance, demonstrating Chavez’s ability to merge modern design principles with traditional bronze casting techniques. The work possesses a sculptural presence that is both intimate in scale and visually powerful, making it an engaging piece for collectors of modernist sculpture and American mid-century design. Resting on its original base, the sculpture measures approximately 7 ¼ inches high, 10 inches wide, and 3 ¼ inches deep. The compact scale and sophisticated form make it ideal for display on a pedestal, desk, or curated sculpture shelf. Eduardo Arcenio Chavez (1917–1995) was born in Wagon Mound and became a versatile and highly respected American artist whose practice encompassed mural painting, bronze sculpture, illustration, lithography, and oil painting. He studied at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center under prominent artists Boardman Robinson and Frank Mechau. Early in his career, Chavez created murals throughout the American West before serving in World War II. Following the war, Chavez and his wife, painter Jenne Magafan, became part of the thriving postwar artist community in Woodstock. Over the course of his career he received numerous prestigious honors, including the Tiffany Grant (1948), Fulbright Award (1951), and the Childe Hassam Award (1953). Chavez also taught at the Art Students League of New York, Colorado College, and Syracuse University, helping shape the next generation of American artists. A member of the Woodstock Art Association, the National Academy of Design, and the National Society of Mural Painters, Chavez established a lasting reputation within 20th-century American art. Chama stands as a refined example of Chavez’s sculptural vision and would make a significant addition to collections of mid-century modern sculpture, American modernism, and works by influential Southwestern artists.
