About the Item

Tom Price’s artistic practice centers on materials and is primarily driven by innovative and experimental creative methods. The artist describes himself as “working in collaboration with materials, processes and phenomena, and that the final physical outcome is a product of mutual consent.” Coal is one of his preferred mediums. Price values its aesthetic qualities—particularly its darkness and opacity—as well as its intrinsic and functional properties. Coal, being one of the purest forms of carbon, is the fundamental element of all known life forms and an essential energy source for humanity. Through extensive experimentation, Tom Price has gained strong mastery over this material and now produces a diverse range of artworks using it. The Carbon Voids series emerged from the combination of various geometric ‘positive’ shapes (creating solids) and ‘negative’ shapes (creating voids). With this geometric approach, the artist investigates the relationship between humans and the objects they interact with; thanks to the presence of voids, these works can function as containers or seats. It is up to the viewer to decide whether the piece is functional or purely sculptural by positioning it differently. In Carbon Void Blue, a resin triangle is set within the coal like a gemstone embedded in rock, its translucent surface capturing and reflecting light. Photos: Jaroslav Moravec.
