About the Item

He was a very active sculptor who gained considerable fame; he died in 1879 at the age of only 50, mourned by all. Having no heirs, he left his estate to the Brera Academy and his most beloved and accomplished students. Among his works, the female nudes are noteworthy for their noble structure, opulent forms, and soft surfaces. Notable examples include Schiava (Slave Girl), which was successful at the 1867 International Exhibition in Paris, Leggitrice (Reader), Naiade (Naiad) (Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in Brescia) and, also in Brescia, the tombs of Cesare Arici and Teodoro Lechi in the Vantiniano Cemetery. Two lions on the steps of the parish church of Gussago at the gates of Brescia. History (located at the foot of Odoardo Tabacchi's monument to Cavour), Faust and Margherita (The Kiss) in marble, and the plaster Arnaldo da Brescia (Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan), the colossal statue of Moses at the Archbishop's Palace in Milan, Nostalgia di Caino, Alessandro Volta (1878) at the University of Pavia and the bust of Angelo Mai (Pinacoteca in Bergamo).
