A dark grey ceramic head with a deep, steady gaze and a weathered metal-like surface explores the expressive possibilities of the human face.
Created by Spanish artist Óscar Aldonza Torres in 2026, Testa non metálica—Non-Metallic Head—belongs to his ongoing Testas series. In this body of work, the artist approaches the head not as a conventional portrait of a particular individual, but as a field of material and psychological investigation. Modelling, texture, glaze and firing participate directly in the construction of an autonomous human presence.
The elongated head rises from a broad section of neck and shoulders, giving the sculpture the concentrated frontal presence of a bust while retaining an irregular, deliberately unfinished lower edge. A long nose structures the face vertically, connecting the pronounced brow with the restrained mouth and rounded chin. The projecting ears broaden the silhouette and reinforce its physical, almost archaic character.
The eyes are deeply set beneath the brow and directed outward with a quiet, unwavering intensity. Depending on the angle of illumination, one may become partially immersed in shadow while the other catches more light. This changing visibility does not arise from a radical anatomical asymmetry, but from the modelling of the eye sockets and the interaction between facial volume, textured glaze and light. The expression consequently shifts as the viewer moves around the sculpture, alternating between introspection, vigilance and emotional reserve.
Aldonza leaves the surface visibly active. The refractory clay retains a granular, porous quality beneath glazes ranging from charcoal and graphite grey to subtle violet, greenish and reddish traces. Small pits, tonal deposits and irregular transitions preserve the effects of modelling and firing rather than concealing them beneath a uniform finish.
Although the sculpture is made entirely from refractory clay and ceramic glazes, its dark chromatic range evokes cast iron, oxidised metal or volcanic stone. The original title draws attention to this perceptual contradiction: the work looks heavy, metallic and mineral, yet its material identity remains unmistakably ceramic. Aldonza uses glaze not as superficial decoration but as a means of complicating how the substance of the sculpture is perceived.
Within the Testas series, the human face becomes a place where material transformation and emotional ambiguity converge. The figure does not communicate a single, easily identifiable state. Its closed mouth and sustained gaze instead allow multiple readings to coexist, inviting the viewer to project different experiences of vulnerability, resilience, distance or self-possession onto it.
