About the Item

On offer is a 19th-century Italian Orientalist alabaster bust of a woman with a serene, downcast gaze, a coin necklace, fringed headscarf, and carved roses at the base. Likely modeled after works by Florentine sculptors Pietro Bazzanti (1825-1895) or Ferdinando Vichi (1875-1945), she may represent the biblical Shulamite, known in Italian as “Sulamitide.” The piece reflects the Orientalist and Egyptian Revival styles popular in Europe around 1880–1900. Hand-carved in translucent alabaster for a soft, skin-like glow, it sits on a turned dark green serpentine marble base typical of fine Florentine workshops. Signature/maker’s mark: Nonexistent. Bust dimensions: 10.5”W x 7”D x 14”H.
