About the Item

This blue glass wall sculpture is by John Paul Robinson. This graceful composition in hand-blown glass captures the beauty of light as it travels through the medium. Often inspired by nature, Robinson’s ethereal artwork also references the complex world of science. Here, four elegantly curved solid rods of hand-blown glass in a deep blue make a uniquely dynamic statement. As light shines through them, shadows on the wall add dimension and a sense of movement. The deep blue colour is created from a custom mix of blue and black glass powder. Each highly polished piece acts like a lens, bending the light as it enters it. The name refers to a scientific theory about wave particles. “All of my pieces are informed by, allude to, represent or symbolize an aspect of our scientific understanding of how the world works. Science will one day inform a new spirituality.” John Paul Robinson John Paul Robinson was born in Toronto in 1954 and educated at the Georgian College of Arts and Technology and the Ontario College of Art, where he later taught for several years. Robinson is a Fellow of The Creative Glass Center of America, recipient of the Joan Chalmers Glass Award and has twice received the Best Glass Award at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. Robinson has had solo exhibitions in Montreal, Toronto, Palm Beach, Quebec City and Chicago. His works are in corporate, private and public collections throughout North America, including the Canadian Museum of History, the Musée des beaux-arts, Montreal and the Museum of American Glass, New Jersey."

Probability Deep Blue 4 - elegant, curved, abstract, glass, wall sculpture

By John Paul Robinson

Located in Bloomfield, ON

John Paul Robinson creates original contemporary wall sculptures from coloured glass that are filled with light. This piece features elegant arched deep blue tubes of glass that are polished to a smooth finish and overlap one another to create a dynamic composition. The Canadian artist often explores themes related to how the world works. This is one of a series intended to represent the dual nature of light as both a particle and a wave. In physics, the wave nature of light is referred to as a "probability wave". “The thickness of the glass and curvature of the lens conspire to create their own optical effect. As your gaze moves across the piece it causes the small grains of coloured glass to shift just a bit. Starry Starry Night...

Once upon a time, in the middle of the Ocean, on a very still day, while the sun was shining, a wave has appeared. Why did the wave appear exactly at that place and time? Nobody knows. What we know for centuries, is that the Ocean is never still, and always has waves at the horizon. We know that a wave is only energy. Energy transmitted through particles of water, causing it to swirl into an endless circular motion. And if not obstructed, waves have the potential to travel across an entire ocean basin. The story of the Wave Lounge was born once upon a time, while gazing at the never-ending blue horizon. Inspired by the vast energy of the wind and sea strongly colliding together, the idea of this monolithic functional sculpture was thus born. The concept As a piece of the Ocean, a strong presence of mass was needed in the style of Wave Lounge. The twist of a wave near braking point, encapsulated in time, that will completely charm the viewer’s eyes. With a total neglect for traditional design, this fully functional design piece will undoubtedly generate emotions. Be prepared to take a large slice of wave right into your home. Build process Build fully by hand, with acrylic glass as a primary material.
