About the Item

A fine patinated cast bronze of a classical nude male figure running on three steps, the Greek messenger Pheidippides, and titled “Nenikhkamen” purportedly ancient Greek for “We are Victorious,” signed Max Kruse on base, copyright 15/391, with illegible foundry marks.. Max Kruse (1854-1942) was a German sculptor born in born in Berlin in 1854. He studied at the Royal Academic University of Fine Arts in Berlin under Fritz Schaper and Albert Wolff. In 1881, he achieved his first success at the academy exhibition with the statue of the "Siegerbote von Marathon" and received the Rome Prize. He was appointed Royal Professor in 1907 and joined the Berlin Secession in 1908, where he was vice chairman until 1910. This cast bronze is presented on a wooden base in very good condition, with its laurel branch missing in the runner’s hand. Dimensions: 21.5 in H x 20 in W x 6.75 in D. Ref: 8
