\u201cThe goal was to create something romantic without feeling overly literal,\u201d Solis says. \u201cI\u2019m drawn to landscapes that feel lush, whimsical and slightly transportive, yet timeless enough to avoid trends.\u201d Wicker seating<\/a> and weathered-stone hardscaping among the grass clumps give the garden the air of having evolved over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUltimately,\u201d Solis says, \u201cthe most successful pool patios encourage you to slow down, linger and connect with the landscape around you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Summer Thornton<\/a> created Casa Rosada<\/a>, her vacation-home-cum-resort in Sayulita, Mexico, she envisioned the Pacific coast property as a fluid environment intimately merged with its tropical surroundings. The pool is the epitome of that connection, stretching from the open-air living spaces to the sandy beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI had this vision of a sunken living room evoking \u201970s allure but with a seamless flow to the outdoors,\u201d Thornton says. \u201cTo achieve this terracing effect with the room, while still keeping the infinity-pool intersection with the ocean, we had to raise the entire site by about eight feet. I’ll go to great lengths to achieve a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contributing to the liminal effect are vein-cut travertine<\/a> flooring, a handcrafted txt.ure daybed<\/a>, colorful Colima chairs<\/a> by Comit\u00e9 de Proyectos<\/a> and custom coffee tables<\/a> by Daniel Valero from Mestiz inspired by the turtles that nest on the nearby beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can be indoors and feel like you’re outdoors, and you can be outdoors and still feel connected to the people who are indoors,\u201d the designer says. \u201cIt\u2019s all one cohesive flow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its plan for this shingle-clad beach cottage in Amagansett<\/a>, New York, measuring just 525 square feet, Studio SFW<\/a> relied as much on the surrounding landscape as on its interiors. The pool occupies a prime spot in the compact backyard, where stone retaining walls, shifts in elevation, evergreen plantings and Kingsley Bate furniture<\/a> create a sense of depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t try to fool ourselves into thinking the house was remotely spacious,\u201d says Studio SFW partner Ward Welch. \u201cWe had to make sure the living space extended into the yard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A zoning restriction that prevented an existing shed<\/a> from being raised forced the team to dig downward instead, which ended up giving the property a more expansive feel. They converted the shed into a pool house, while establishing a new level for the bluestone<\/a> deck and Pennsylvania fieldstone walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe zoning restriction ultimately proved to be a good lesson in how subtle manipulation of the ground plane can have a great effect on the perceived scale of the landscape,\u201d Welch says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surrounded by pecan trees on the banks of the Colorado River outside Houston, this family home<\/a> by Fern Santini<\/a> was designed for everything from playful afternoons to large-scale entertaining. The pool sits beside brick patios and outbuildings by architect Michael G. Imber<\/a>, who found inspiration in the vernacular of 1920s<\/a> rural Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe design was twofold: It had to be perfect for a family with growing children and the day-to-day enjoyment of the outdoors but also as a venue for cocktail parties and fundraisers,\u201d Santini says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She points to the open-air pool house, sliding barn doors and Formations<\/a> outdoor furniture \u2014 “sculpture in the landscape” \u2014 as standout elements. \u201cThe generous patio spaces ensure that it all works!\u201d she adds. \u201cDeep patios are essential for comfort and traffic \u2014 these are perfection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designer Alissa Sutton<\/a> and architects C&C Partners devised this modern hillside house in Los Angeles<\/a> from the ground up, orienting its outdoor living spaces toward wide vistas of the city below. A natural-gas fire feature runs along one side of the pool, creating a dramatic focal point by day and night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy favorite thing about this pool was the 27-foot fire element,\u201d Sutton says. \u201cThey kept telling me it was too long and couldn\u2019t be done, but I didn\u2019t give up and found a way to make it work. It was so beautiful to have the fire and water mix in such an expansive space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huge openings connect the house to the layered terraces, which have ample seating for taking in the view. \u201cCalifornia living is a true balance between interior and exterior,\u201d Sutton says. \u201cThe living, kitchen and family rooms and primary suite all have direct access to the outdoor pool area.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The furniture reinforces the rooftop\u2019s crisp lines. \u201cThis pool was conceived as a floating architectural moment,\u201d says Smith. \u201cAnd every furnishing was chosen to honor that \u2014 sculptural teak and Italian stone pieces<\/a> that echo the geometry of the space rather than simply occupy it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The firm, which worked with Blasen Landscape Architecture<\/a> on the hardscape and plantings, chose modern teak loungers by RODA<\/a> to match the architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe client wanted a real folly \u2014 something charming and full of mischief \u2014 to anchor the view at the end of an all\u00e9e of trees,\u201d says New York\u2013 and Los Angeles\u2013based designer David Netto<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, Netto introduced a striped \u201ctent\u201d structure, in which he placed a 1930s carved-limestone console by Jean-Charles Moreux<\/a> and two 1970s wicker chairs by Isamu Kenmochi<\/a>. He leaned a 1940s French mirror<\/a> from the estate of collector Alan Moss at an angle to reflect the pool and view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pavilion is part of a compound in Southampton<\/a>, New York, consisting of a main house, guest house and party barn, all designed by architect Gil Schafer<\/a> and set within gardens by Miranda Brooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
