They custom designed the marble-slab floors to match the curves of the architecture and modeled the railings after ones Walker saw in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glittering against all the black and white are bursts of gold from a few select pieces. \u201cThe first item I sourced was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/furniture\/lighting\/chandeliers-pendant-lights\/\">chandelier<\/a> I found at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/dealers\/galerie-glustin-luminiares\/shop\/\">Galerie Glustin<\/a> while shopping at the March\u00e9 aux Puces de Saint-Ouen, in Paris,\u201d Walker says. \u201cIt started the juxtaposition between the classical and modern elements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most contemporary piece here would have to be the brass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/furniture\/seating\/chairs\/brass-bow-tie-chair-unique-dining-chair-zhoujie-zhang\/id-f_22290962\/\">Bow Tie chair<\/a> by Chinese artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/zhang-zhoujie\/furniture\/\">Zhang Zhoujie<\/a>, which Walker purchased on 1stDibs through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/dealers\/galleryall\/\">Gallery ALL<\/a>. The vintage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/furniture\/tables\/console-tables\/material\/acrylic\/\">acrylic console<\/a>, from 1stDibs, and white <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/restoration-hardware\/\">Restoration Hardware<\/a> sofa echo the interior architecture, while the original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/joan-miro\/art\/\">Joan Mir\u00f3<\/a> painting speaks for itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked to define Texas design, Cukerbaum says, \u201cDallas and Houston have their own aesthetic, but modern architecture has really swept the market in Austin. For instance, she says, \u201cthe fluted plaster dome in the home office draws inspiration from ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/buy\/roman-marble-column\/\">Roman columns<\/a> and is contemporized with the burnt sienna color of the plaster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Playing off the plaster walls, rough-hewn ceiling beams and French-oak floorboards are sleek furniture pieces: a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/christopher-kreiling\/\">Christopher Kreiling<\/a> lamp, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/arper\/furniture\/\">Arper<\/a> office chair and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/zanotta\/furniture\/\">Zanotta<\/a> desk, the last representing a more modern nod to Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe goal of this design,\u201d Oberhauser summarizes, \u201cwas to pair timeless elements of old-world architecture with a contemporary interior.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/photo\/art-deco-contemporary-eclectic-french-maximalist-modern-transitional-bar-and-game-room-dallas-tx\/6052302\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"950\" height=\"633\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cravotta-Interiors-Kips-Bay-Dallas-950x633.jpg\" alt=\"Mark Cravotta hi-fi lounge for Kips Bay Dallas\" class=\"wp-image-420889\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cravotta-Interiors-Kips-Bay-Dallas-950x633.jpg 950w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cravotta-Interiors-Kips-Bay-Dallas-525x350.jpg 525w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cravotta-Interiors-Kips-Bay-Dallas-120x80.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cravotta-Interiors-Kips-Bay-Dallas-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cravotta-Interiors-Kips-Bay-Dallas-1400x933.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cravotta-Interiors-Kips-Bay-Dallas.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Ryann Ford<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In last year&#8217;s Kips Bay Dallas showhouse, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/design-firms\/cravotta-interiors\/\">Mark Cravotta<\/a> converted a windowless attic into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/project\/hifi-lounge-dallas-tx\/234752\/\">laid-back lair<\/a> for listening to music on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/buy\/vintage-stereo\/\">hi-fi<\/a>. \u201cThe space was dark,\u201d he says. \u201cSo, rather than try to mitigate that factor, I decided to lean in to it and make a moody lounge space as a treat for all of the senses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To soften the sound coming from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/a-for-ara\/\">A for Ara<\/a> speakers, Cravotta covered the ceiling in linen, applied a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/buy\/phillip-jeffries-wallpaper\/\">Phillip Jeffries<\/a> wood veneer to the walls and placed a bespoke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/kyle-bunting\/\">Kyle Bunting<\/a> rug atop the wall-to-wall carpeting. The steel-and-leather hammock is a Jim Zivic design for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/ralph-pucci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ralph Pucci<\/a>, and the lounge chairs and media cabinet are by Jiun Ho. The ceiling light is by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/apparatus\/\">Apparatus<\/a>, and the art came from a local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/introspective-magazine\/texas-art-galleries\/\">Texas gallery<\/a>. This is most evident in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/blogs\/the-study\/new-bohemian\/\">new-bohemian-style<\/a> bedroom, which the designers grounded with an oversize Ethnicraft oak bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe bedroom is fairly small, so the very tall ceiling and all-white detailing give it a much airier, generous feel,\u201d McKenzie says. \u201cThe huge bed fills the entire room, and there is really no other furniture in there \u2014 also no TV, since the clients wanted a calm, serene space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The articulated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/blueprint-lighting\/furniture\/?q=piatto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Piatto wall lamps<\/a> are from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/blueprint-lighting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blueprint Lighting<\/a>, the Gatto table lamp is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/a-castiglioni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Achille Castiglioni<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/dealers\/flos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FLOS<\/a> design, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/buy\/bubble-chandelier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bubble chandelier<\/a> is by the Light Factory. The vintage appliqu\u00e9-and-embroidery blanket came from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/dealers\/studio-variously-llc\/shop\/\">Studio Variously\u2019s 1stDibs storefront<\/a>, and the woven rug is part of McKenzie and Kilday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/dealers\/mk-objects\/shop\/\">MK Objects<\/a> collection. The slender bud vases were designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/gunnar-nylund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gunnar Nylund<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/rorstrand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">R\u00f6rstrand<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou often see these old bungalows being either renovated with a certain look \u2014 usually modern farmhouse \u2014 or torn down in favor of large, supermodern builds,\u201d McKenzie says, noting that MK doesn\u2019t follow such Austin trends. \u201cThere are certainly Texas-specific details in this project, like the inclusion of rustic and natural materials. We like to embrace rather than eliminate these elements where they work and integrate them into a timeless approach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/photo\/cottage-living-room\/2751183\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"737\" height=\"950\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/J.-Randall-Powers-Houston-Red-Room-737x950.jpg\" alt=\"J. In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/project\/a-color-study-houston-tx\/80773\/\">updated traditional Houston house<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/design-firms\/jrandallpowers\/\">J. Randall Powers<\/a> proves such phobias unwarranted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the library, the designer chose a glossy red by Fine Paints of Europe to complement \u2014 not compete with \u2014 edgy artworks by (from left) Allison Schulnik, Eve Sussman and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/buy\/jackie-gendel\/\">Jackie Gendel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe young homeowners acquired this property by noted Southern architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/furniture\/more-furniture-collectibles\/collectibles-curiosities\/books\/architecture-john-f-staub-houston-south-howard-barnstone\/id-f_6334693\/\">John Staub<\/a> and wanted it to have a fresh, younger feel but not to lose any of the detail that Staub homes are noted for,\u201d Powers says. \u201cThe immediate conversation was all about color \u2014 as much color as we could get away with without it feeling like a box of Crayolas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The couple\u2019s family, on both sides, collect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/buy\/18th-century-english-furniture\/\">18th-century English furniture<\/a>, and they themselves started to amass select antiques soon after their wedding. \u201cWe had a plethora of pieces to choose from,\u201d the designer notes. \u201cWe carefully chose fabrics to update the furnishings and give them zest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/william-billy-haines\/furniture\/\">William Haines<\/a> cocktail table belonged to the wife\u2019s grandfather. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/furniture\/seating\/club-chairs\/\">club chairs<\/a> were reupholstered in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/brunschwig-and-fils\/furniture\/\">Brunschwig &amp; Fils<\/a> print, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/furniture\/seating\/ottomans-poufs\/\">ottoman<\/a> is covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/la-maison-pierre-frey\/furniture\/\">Pierre Frey<\/a> linen velvet. The sisal rug came from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/buy\/stark-rugs\/\">Stark<\/a>. Rudin<\/a> chair backs make it easy for them to pull the seats away from the table \u201cwithout having to grab the upholstery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her aim, she notes, was to make the space \u201clight and happy.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/hunt-slonem\/\">Hunt Slonem<\/a> bunny painting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/introspective-magazine\/hunt-slonem-groundworks-fabrics\/\">introduces plenty of cheer<\/a>, as do the blush hues found throughout the home, including in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/dealers\/schumacher\/\">Schumacher<\/a> upholstery covering the chairs and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/creators\/lee-jofa\/\">Lee Jofa<\/a> fabric on the throw pillows. she says. &#8220;Next, we scoured pieces from the Round Top Antiques Show, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/furniture\/seating\/ottomans-poufs\/\">leather poufs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/art\/\">art<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.mom\/furniture\/more-furniture-collectibles\/textiles\/pillows-throws\/\">pillows<\/a>.&#8221;
