In the main bedroom of his East Hampton home, Robert Stilin<\/a> framed the custom bed, upholstered in Loro Piana<\/a> cashmere, with a mix of artworks by Wolfgang Tillmans<\/a>, Antony Cairns and Andrew Brischler, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re complemented by some of Stilin\u2019s favorite 1stDibs finds: a pair of vintage Thonet<\/a> ma\u00eetre d\u2019 tables that he repurposed as nightstands and two vintage Walligraph<\/a> desk lamps.<\/p>\n\n\n

The seamless blend of contemporary art<\/a> and vintage furnishings<\/a> continues in the hallways. Stilin\u2019s curatorial approach? \u201cI select each piece because I love it and know it will work for me and my home,\u201d he says. \u201cThat confidence and trust lead me to this place where I put it all together and it just works.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her house in London\u2019s East End, Sophie Ashby<\/a> doesn\u2019t reserve the art for the rooms where she entertains. \u201cTruthfully, I ran out of walls and thought it would be fun to create a space that felt more like a gallery or a living room rather than a bath,\u201d she says of her whimsical family bathroom. \u201cFor me, art<\/a> is really where the design process starts and ends. It ties everything together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her arrangement includes posters<\/a>, drawings<\/a>, tea towels and prints<\/a> by such artists as Chris Ofili<\/a>, Francis Bacon<\/a> and Pablo Picasso<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miles Redd and David Kaihoi<\/a>\u2019s design for an upstate New York home combines English country-house decor<\/a> with updated 21st-century style. Against a striped wallpaper in the entry hall, they hung a group of still-life<\/a>, landscape<\/a> and portrait<\/a> paintings to draw the eye up the stairs. For artful contemplation or a taking spot of tea, the team placed two antique chairs, a William IV<\/a> mahogany berg\u00e8re<\/a> and a George IV<\/a> upholstered library chair<\/a>, in the nook under the stairway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome people love handbags<\/a> and shoes<\/a> \u2014 we love art and artists,\u201d says Redd. \u201cThe push and pull of different mediums and different hands on interesting backgrounds always amazes and gives the eye so much pleasure. Placing art is everything.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For an Atlanta showhouse, Corey Damen Jenkins<\/a> installed what he calls a ladies\u2019 speakeasy in the basement of a Regency-style<\/a> house. \u201cI wanted to create an underground garden,” he explains. “So, our goal was to design a space that felt like it was bright and airy and brought the outdoors inside.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A built-in banquette (which can seat 20!) is paired with accent tables from Maitland-Smith<\/a>. Above it, a salon-style grouping features a contemporary portrait by Shanequa Gay and vintage works from 1stDibs seller William Word Fine Antiques<\/a>. \u201cThe artwork is a requirement on this lower level, given the absence of windows,\u201d Jenkins notes. \u201cIt gives the eye a reason to travel the space, it breaks up the botanical motif on the walls, and it brings additional layers of interest, color and texture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter Mikic<\/a> outfitted the library in his Oxfordshire, UK, house with layered textures and materials to create a cozy haven<\/a> and deployed the art to enhance the laid-back vibe. \u201cThe composition of the gallery wall is relaxed, adding a softness to the structured symmetrical bookcase,\u201d Mikic says. \u201cThe scale of the smaller artworks complements the books, while the sofa pattern adds to the overall feel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the pieces on the wall are by students or unknown creators. They play off the sofa, upholstered in an eye-catching graphic print from Schumacher<\/a>. The pink table lamps \u2014 perfect for reading \u2014 are by Hans-Agne Jakobsson<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A group of works by Robert Longo<\/a> forms a modern, dynamic composition in the primary bedroom of a Chicago home designed by Sasha Adler<\/a>. \u201cRather than one large piece of art, this series really punctuates the otherwise incredibly calm space,\u201d she says. \u201cThe black-and-white pieces are neutral, but the movement gives them a sense of levity that brings so much energy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adler herself designed the white nightstands with brass accents, as well as the emerald-green-velvet daybed. She found the chandelier, by Bourgeois Boheme Atelier<\/a>, on 1stDibs. <\/p>\n\n\n\t
