The 2025 1stDibs Interior Design Survey<\/a> revealed that many interior designers would be embracing painted murals (28 percent) and patterned wallpapers (26 percent) in the year ahead. So, we thought it was time to take a closer look at 10 majestic spaces by designers who were ahead of the curve on this timeless trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the dining room of a family house in Highland Park<\/a>, Illinois, Wendy Labrum<\/a> introduced an inky, atmospheric mural to offset the sun-drenched foyer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis new-construction home is light and bright,\u201d she says, \u201cand since the dining room sits right off the airy entryway, we wanted something a little moodier to set the tone for the adjacent black-lacquered bar<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The custom wallcovering by A New Wall depicts a landscape of rolling hills and grazing bovines. \u201cIt was the starting point for this room,\u201d Labrum explains, \u201cand everything else evolved organically around it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The custom marble-topped dining table was inspired by a smaller antique piece. A vintage cabinet<\/a> and rustic pottery<\/a> add character and depth. \u201cWhen you have a defined space that can handle a wallpaper or painted mural,\u201d Labrum says, \u201cit\u2019s a great way to make the space feel unique and special.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murals feature prominently throughout a tailored apartment on Manhattan\u2019s Upper West Side<\/a> designed by Kristine Irving, of Koo de Kir Architectural Interiors<\/a>, for a family of Boston transplants eager for a fresh start. \u201cThey wanted a full about-face in decor and design,\u201d Irving says, \u201cand we created a colorful haven full of pattern and texture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the powder room<\/a>, hand-painted panels by Porter Teleo<\/a> cover the walls in an earthy abstraction. The demilune silhouette of an Ochre leather-wrapped console table<\/a> echoes the panels\u2019 curves. \u201cSometimes, a wall mural is all the room needs,\u201d Irving says, \u201clike being enveloped in a giant pattern hug.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A similar visual language reappears in the office and guest room, where Porter Teleo\u2019s hand-painted work continues across the ceiling above a custom Murphy bed<\/a> by Koo de Kir. The multiuse space is further outfitted with bespoke desks, a Lasvit pendant<\/a> and a Serge Mouille floor lamp<\/a> from 1stDibs. The presence of a Ruth Bader Ginsburg portrait<\/a> by June August epitomizes the eclectic tastes of the art-collecting residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe kept layering in more patterns,\u201d Irving says, \u201cand offered surprise moments like the Melin Tregwynt patterned blanket when the bed is pulled down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the library of her Manhattan apartment<\/a>, Janine Carendi MacMurray, founder of Area Interior Design<\/a>, coated the paneled walls in high-gloss navy lacquer<\/a>, then installed a hand-painted mural around the fireplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wanted to create a moment of impact in a room where the architecture offered only one small wall for expression,\u201d she says. \u201cThat limitation became an opportunity.\u201d The scene of delicate white branches and birds offers a peaceful pause within the room\u2019s moody shell. \u201cThe mural is by Gracie<\/a> \u2014 a favorite of mine \u2014 chosen for its timeless elegance and the way it anchors the space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The furniture strikes a balance between refinement and function: A French mid-century<\/a> brass coffee table<\/a>, custom Schumacher<\/a>-upholstered sofa and Lawson-Fenning<\/a> chairs sit atop a herringbone hide rug<\/a>. \u201cBeauty and real life can \u2014 and should \u2014 coexist,\u201d MacMurray says. \u201cThis room may seem delicate, but it has also hosted many lively knee-hockey games<\/a> with my son and his friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the dining room of Wesley Moon<\/a>\u2019s 1,750-square-foot Manhattan apartment<\/a>, a hand-painted mural presents a fantastical counterpoint to the urban view outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devised in collaboration with de Gournay<\/a>, the\u200b customized Scenes of Sicily\u200b dreamscape depicts Palermo\u2019s Church of Maria Santissima del Carmelo\u200b surrounded by\u200b stylized vegetation, water, mountains and glowing sky, rendered in matte pigments over gold leaf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have a love of history and travel, which were the inspirations for the design of my home,\u201d Moon says<\/a>. A curving banquette<\/a> \u2014 based on one Moon admired in a Parisian brasserie \u2014 offers cushy seating for guests beneath an opulent ceramic chandelier<\/a> designed by Eve Kaplan to hold either bulbs or candles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m always trying to figure out what the contemporary version of something classical is,\u201d Moon explains, “so I can get that old-world feeling but adjusted to modern times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amy Kehoe, cofounder of Nickey Kehoe<\/a>, designed this home office in California\u2019s Santa Monica Mountains<\/a> as a place of calm and separation. \u201cThe room is at the far end of the house, allowing for inherent peace,\u201d she says. \u201cThe idea was to play into the serenity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sepia-tone<\/a> pastoral wallpaper by Susan Harter, with fading trees and soft groundcover, creates an immersive environment. A wooden desk by Lawson-Fenning<\/a> is paired with a Summer Studio lamp in a matching finish. A Nickey Kehoe credenza lines one wall, topped with a vintage brass-and-leather lamp by Einar Backstrom<\/a>. The brick flooring adds an outdoor-patio vibe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith anything bold,\u201d Kehoe says, \u201cwe ask ourselves a series of questions: Does the expression feel dynamic and signature, or does it interrupt the home\u2019s atmosphere?\u201d In this case, the mural functions not as an exclamation mark but as a gentle wash of emotion meant to produce tranquility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a 1907 Edwardian house in San Francisco<\/a>, Noz Nozawa<\/a> conjured what she calls a \u201cbig wow\u201d with a spectrum-spanning scheme in the entry that sets the tone for the rest of the home. A rainbow stair runner by Stark cascades from scarlet to lavender, culminating in a purple cut-to-fit pool-shaped rug on the ground floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joining the riot of color are hand-painted murals by Caroline Lizarraga, which transfer the rug\u2019s sense of fluidity onto the walls. Three geode-inspired forms\u2014 rendered in pink, red, orange and turquoise, with gold veining rippling across the surfaces \u2014 create a painterly tension with the home\u2019s traditional millwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA part of me wanted to tone down that grandeur,\u201d Nozawa says<\/a>. \u201cBy disobeying the architecture and softening lines, I knew we could knock it down a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A blue-globed Murano-glass<\/a> chandelier, hanging like a jewel from the ceiling, is echoed by a Jonathan Adler\u200b<\/a> Globo console<\/a> beneath the stained-glass bay window. \u201cNothing in our portfolio looks quite like it,\u201d Nozawa says of her design for the foyer, and for the house as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis Atlanta home was built in the 1930s<\/a>, and for the bathroom, we wanted to honor its Regency-era roots<\/a> while giving it a fresh, modern twist,\u201d Melanie Turner<\/a> says of a jewel-box powder room in a lively project full of color. Working with architect Yong Pak, Turner created a space that balances ornate detail with contemporary effortlessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A hand-painted chinoiserie mural by Penshaw Hill envelops the room in black and gold. A vintage brass-and-velvet chair<\/a> along with a Waterworks<\/a> sink and fittings have appropriately trad forms in modern-day finishes, while a crisp round mirror<\/a> and Jiun Ho pendants present more Space Age<\/a> silhouettes. Still, everything plays nicely within the color scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe love using murals \u2014 especially in smaller rooms \u2014 because they instantly give the space a sense of drama and story,\u201d Turner explains. \u201cA mural can transport you, make the room feel layered and soulful and give even the tiniest powder room or hallway a bold, unforgettable personality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the dining room of a sprawling traditional house in Manhasset<\/a>, New York, Hilary Matt<\/a> served up a bold, playful aesthetic, using a royal-blue botanical wallpaper by de Gournay<\/a> filled with graphic white branches and vibrant birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis client wanted a fun and colorful pop when you walked into her home,\u201d Matt says. \u201cWe loved the idea of doing a colorful and whimsical space.\u201d Continuing the organic theme is a live-edge dining table<\/a>, surrounded by brass-legged Gubi Beetle<\/a> chairs upholstered in ocher velvet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above, a Lindsey Adelman<\/a> branching globe fixture in brass picks up the chairs\u2019 warm metal tones, while its armature advances the visual rhythm of the wallpaper. A tan Stark rug<\/a> produces a soft shift in texture and hue underfoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI envisioned this bedroom as a peaceful, collected escape \u2014 inviting and relaxed, with a thoughtful blend of vintage and modern elements,\u201d says Charlotte Lucas<\/a>, who layered the boudoir of a saucy Atlanta poolhouse<\/a> with color, texture and personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whimsical House of Harris wallpaper features trees magically blooming with yellow, pink and periwinkle flowers and populated by brightly plumed birds, all on a white ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reinforcing the room\u2019s charm are bespoke furnishings and curated vintage finds: a custom bed in a Claremont fabric<\/a> with Samuel & Sons trim, a Paavo Tynell<\/a> floral chandelier, a plaid Edward Wormley<\/a> bench and a bedside globe pendant suspended from long brass tubes, which was sourced from 1stDibs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love using expressive walls to bring a little personality and playfulness into a space,\u201d Lucas says. \u201cIt\u2019s an easy way to set the tone for a room and make it feel layered and unique without being too serious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA series of antique hand-painted chinoiserie<\/a> murals was the original point of inspiration in this space,\u201d Corey Damen Jenkins<\/a> says of this parlor in a traditional home on Maryland\u2019s Eastern Shore<\/a>\u200b. \u201cThe entire color palette was informed by these panels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior\u200b, featured in this year’s 1stDibs 50<\/a>, was designed for multiple functions\u200b \u2014\u200b playing games, reading, noshing and lounging\u200b \u2014\u200b with distinct furniture arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 19th-century English library table<\/a> is paired with spoon-back armchairs<\/a> by Dessin Fournir<\/a>, while a Syrian Moorish tray table<\/a>\u200b from 1stDibs anchors a more relaxed sitting area near the fireplace<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough very traditional in style,\u201d the designer says, \u201cthis room is certainly not lacking personality or a distinct point of view.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Period details, like a Regency-style convex mirror<\/a> and a knight-themed 18th-century secretary<\/a>, mingle with clean-lined club chairs, also by Dessin Fournir, and sleek brass desk lamps<\/a>, creating what Jenkins calls \u201ca wonderful tension point between antiquity and modernity.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
